Good for them.  They can waste some of that cap space on a overpay like Barnes. Better them than Boston.

Will make them marginally better. Any improvement for the bottom dwellers is great for us.

Doesn't he play the same position as Covington, who's pretty much Barnes-lite?

Excellent.

I think it makes sense, though.  Will be a while before they need to pay their main guys.  Might as well overpay to bring in players that could complement Simmons.

Great fit for what they are building there.  Makes total sense.  They need to spend money somewhere.  They have a ridiculous amount of cap space.  They apparently thought about going after Tobias Harris last Summer but decided they were better off tanking.   Clearly that worked out for them.

I bet Barnes is chomping at the bit to leave a championship contender to go to the Sixers. I understand that he may very well need to choose a new destination, but if there are any other max offers available, he will likely choose those first.

More like Barnes-very light. Those who want to define his future by this year's playoff performance may live to regret it, or not.

Covington 2015-2016  38.5%, 35.3% 3PT

Barnes 2015-2016       46.6%   38.3% 3PT

This is someone that they can overpay and he might actually sign because he is now considered damaged goods.

Yeah, it definitely makes some sense. They only have $22 million committed next year, so they could give Barnes his max AND Nerlens $20 million (next year) and still have $40+ million in space, more than enough for a max guy in next year's stacked FA class.

I can't imagine going from playing for a team that won 73 games a year and living in the Bay Area to playing with a bunch of 20 year old project big mans that projects to win 25 games in Philadelphia. I'm not trying to bag on Philadelphia, but being an athlete with a million dollar salary the Bay Area is an incredible place to live.
