While I agree that part of this is a philosophy, there is also a real roster issue when it comes to getting to the hoop. The C's just don't have a ton of guys that are that great at it.
Just to go through a few:
Pierce still can, but not like he used to. He has lost a step, and it does prevent him from getting all the way to the hoop as easily as he once did. It also seems to take more out of him to do that, which is tough when he is pacing himself.
Rondo can absolutely do this more, and he should. With this, there is a level of self preservation with getting to the hoop. He just can't take that big of a beating as such a small guy, and keep bouncing up. But he is at his best when he is getting to the basket and going up strong.
Green...well, he is just frustrating. First of all, he really can only dribble well with his right hand. If he is able to get his right hand free and get a step, he can make some strong drives. However, he also has a tendency to just fling the ball up there, rather than finishing strong, even when he can get past his man. He is just insanely inconsistent with this.
Avery doesn't have the handle to consistently get to the basket. He has gotten better since he got here, but its still a work in progress. He needs to work on the first step to create separation. His backdoor cuts are nice though.
Sully can score inside against certain matchups, but if you make a point to get him in the post, then the defense closes him down, and his lack of athleticism makes it tough for him to get a good shot off.
Lee is good at finishing, but I am not sure he has the first step to consistently get to the hoop except for in transition.
And I am not sure anyone else really even needs mentioning at this point.
This is why this team does need a change. Get someone else in here who can score in the paint, and it could make a big difference. Or go the opposite way, and trade in the midrange jumpers for legit 3 pointers. But right now, they are stuck in no mans land, and its tough to watch.
