You can thank the NBA for their terrible salary cap system.

I actually think it is one of the best, nuanced, and fair systems in all sports (except the owners still get too much).

What's your problem with it?

The owners get too much ??  They own the business, they should get the bulk of the profits.  At the same time, they are making millionaires out of these athletes, many of whom wouldn't qualify to attend college, much less get an MBA and become wealthy otherwise.

I'm getting sick of this particular observation that pro athletes are a particular class of millionaires that somehow lack the legitimacy to deserve their money. It is commonly being used to insinuate that their talent is wholly unrelated to any intellect or work ethic and that they would otherwise be poor and dysfunctional.  It has a distinct whiff of racism to it.

Stop it. It's poisonous.

The owners own their businesses but the players are the actual product. Without the players there is no NBA and the owners wouldn't own businesses worth a billion dollars or more. Right now all basketball related income is divide 50/50 by the players and owners. That's more than fair if not undercutting the players.

You have to realize, besides making profit on a yearly basis when dealing with revenue vs expenditures, the owners make gigantic money from the increase in the overall value of the franchise. For instance, the current Celtics ownership group bought the Celtics in 2002 for around $360 million. The franchise is now valued at $2.5 billion. That means the ownership group, besides making money each year has accrued $2.14 billion in value of the team in just 16 years. That's an annual increase of team value of $133.75 million.

Good luck finding a better investment value than that anywhere. Believe me, there's no reason to not like this collective bargaining agreement if you are an owner of an NBA franchise.

The customers make millionaires out of the athletes. The owners pay them that much, individually and through collective bargaining, because they can get millions, often hundreds of millions, more out of those same customers.  Paychecks are not gifts, no matter what someone thinks about the intelligence of the people working for them.
