Will probably stretch out the $450k owed him so could save about a million or so.

Save this year but pay it back and more at higher tax rates in the future.

Eh. We’re talking about $60k over 7 years.  The extra cost is very minimal.

Depends what the tax rate is at the time.  Not my money, but it saves roughly $575 in taxes this year which will almost certainly be exceeded in future payments.  If the Celtics aren’t going to get below the tax this year, it’s better not to stretch.

In future payments collectively, yes, but probably not in any individual tax year.  And we won’t be in the repeater tax for what, four seasons?

Yeah, but if they stretch it out 7 years that's only $65,000 or so they would add on to future tax bills. That $65k will be peanuts compared to what the rest of their tax bills will be like

My hope is that he was waived early because the Celtics have reason to believe a team would claim him.  He would cost the Raptors about $500k less in luxury taxes if they claimed him on waivers than any free agent they could sign to the minimum, for instance.

Seemed like a good guy, just not that good of a basketball player. I could see him having success overseas, where he learns how to play without the ball, and then returning to the NBA.
He had some good tools and nice size for a wing, just never developed a consistent jumpshot that he could play off of.  As a result, his hoop drives were predictable and easy to block.

Good luck Abdel.

Late second round pick who made Boston Celtics NBA Roster. Will find another good job, probably overseas, playing professional basketball.

For those of you who say “he sucked, good riddance”, ask yourself if you wouldn’t have traded places with him. To be able to say one day, to your kids, your grand kids, “I once played for the Boston Celtics.”

I for one congratulate him for what he has already achieved, and hopes he gets another opportunity to play again down the road.

Now let's sign Bird and call it a summer...unless AD or Big Kat become available.

I’d rather keep the spot open and sign Bird to a 2-way.

I'd rather lock him up with a Nader type deal, trade Yabu for 2nd round picks, and still have the open spot.
Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.

I’d rather use any open roster spots on guys who are NBA rotation players.

Can we just merge all the current threads into the one below? It would be the complete Nader experience with some funny takes along the way...

Sadly, he was not better than Blount.

Does not have the foot speed to play NBA defense.

I feel bad for guys who try but don't make it. That said, I don't think he deserved a roster spot, and hopefully the Cs find someone who does.
