Former Sacramento Kings basketball player Tyler Honeycutt has died following a shootout with Los Angeles police, according to US media. According to media reports, Honeycutt was found unresponsive in the Sherman Oaks area of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department later said in a tweet that a man "sustained injuries consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound".

The former UCLA and Sacramento Kings player was contracted to Moscow's BC Khimki, who confirmed his death on Twitter. Police say they were called to a residence about 5pm Friday local time before a man, believed to be Honeycutt, barricaded himself inside. After a standoff, police entered the property. Crisis negotiators and the SWAT team were deployed to the scene and several residences were evacuated in the area as a precaution, according to ESPN. The LAPD said the man died of "self-inflicted gunshot" wounds after he reportedly fired on officers at the scene. No police officers were injured in the standoff, according to the LAPD.

Honeycutt began his career with UCLA and was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in 2011. He played for the Reno Bighorns and Houston Rockets before leaving the United States to play for Israeli team Ironi Nes Ziona BC, followed by BC Khimki in 2014. After a year-long stint with Turkish team Anadolu Efes SK he returned to BC Khimki in 2017.
