If Melo was anything like he was in 2013-2014, Presti would eat the cost and wise up. He let Harden go, because he was trying to save them money financially. And it blew up in their face. Melo just isn't that good enough to even warrant anything more than 12 million max.
If I remember correctly, Sam Presti was trying to save the team around $6M by trading Harden. Buying out Carmelo can save the team around $100M. This has nothing to do with the talent of the player, but rather the cost to keep him. There is no player in the league where a team will absorb $100M to keep one player.
You could argue that there are some players you could eat the cost of $100M for, but sure, I agree this is mainly a financial decision. Doesn't change how terrible Melo has been.
The thing is, even if signing someone like Lebron would cost a team a 100 million, that team would just find ways to alleviate the tax bill because it is just hard to do that.
This is why I fully expect Klay or Dray to leave Golden State when their contracts are up (assuming Durant actually signs a max next summer). There is just no way the Warriors can spend 130+ million on 4 players long term.
