Regular season, right?

1. Houston ~64 wins
2. Golden State ~61
3. Utah ~54
4. New Orleans ~51
5. OKC ~50
6.  Lakers ~48
7. Minnesota ~47
8. Denver ~47
9. Portland (you forgot them) ~46
10. San Antonio ~44
11. Dallas ~40
12. Clippers ~39
13. Memphis ~36
14. Phoenix ~32
15. Sacramento ~27

Portland's tough because they ought to be a playoff team but I feel like they're going to implode this year and possibly blow things up before the deadline.  Also I'm pretty sure if you add all my win totals up I have the league like 40 games over .500, but who cares.

The hardest team to predict right now is San Antonio, but right now I am taking it that Kawhi will "play" for them, though I expect him to sit out games and be a problem as long as he is there diminishing their wins at least early in the year.

1. Houston - 60-65
2. Golden State - 55-60
3. Minnesota - 47-52
4. Oklahoma City - 47-52
5. New Orleans - 47-52
6. Portland - 46-51
7. Utah - 46-51
8. Denver - 46-51
9. San Antonio - 45-50
10. LA Clippers - 43-48
11. LA Lakers - 42-47
12. Memphis - 30-35
13. Sacramento - 27-32
14. Dallas - 20-25
15. Phoenix - 15-20

Playoffs
Houston v. Denver - Houston in 5
OKC v. New Orleans - OKC is 7
GS v. Utah - GS in 4
Minnesota v. Portland - Minny in 5

Houston v. OKC - Houston in 7
GS v. Minny - GS in 5

Houston v. GS - GS in 6
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

This is assuming that Kawhi isn't traded to the Lakers and possibly sits out part or all of the season because he's a weird sourpuss.

60-65 wins:

Golden State
Houston

50-55 wins:

Utah
Oklahoma City
New Orleans

45-50 wins:

LAL
Minnesota
Denver
San Antonio
Portland

Borderline .500 teams:

LAC
Dallas
Memphis

Trash:

Phoenix
Sacramento

I think you’ve got too many wins there, total.  5 50+ win teams and 10 with 45+ is just too many, given that they’re going to be playing the majority of their games against each other.

I like these groupings, I expect the Lakers to be in the second group.

CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

the west had 9 teams at 46 or better last year and the 10th had 42.  1 of those teams was at 65 and another at 58 with 4 others 2 wins from 50 last year.  If Houston and Golden State shave some wins, which is entirely possible, then I could totally see that happening.  I do think it is probably too many 50 win teams, but I could see as many as 12 teams having 45 wins in the West next season and expect the West to be the best conference the sport has ever seen.

The Lakers gotta be in the playoffs or the list is invalid. LeBron James does not miss the postseason.

I'm really confused how you have Dallas so low. Barnes and deandre Jordan are nice players, smith should be a little better and doncic will be very good for a rookie. Dirk is a nice bench player for 20 minutes. Matthews and Barrea are servicable vets

You're probably right ... the very large middle class of the conference probably shades about 5 wins lower as a group than I've got them.

But I think I've got the groupings right.

What strikes me about the West is there are a ton of teams who can / should win 40-55 games and really only the Suns and Kings seem like they don't have the pieces to break .500.

I don’t disagree that you have the groupings correct, although I think groups 2 and 3 will be a bit more muddled than you do.  I could reasonably see any of those teams finishing in the 3-10 spots.

I don't think last year was a fluke or some sort of intentional tank job.  The Mavs just weren't very good and used tanking as an excuse to cover up the poor product they put on the floor.  They have been getting worse for years, trying 1 year fixes and put together just a mishmash of players that don't fit real well.  Jordan is their best player, that isn't a good team.  I also think Doncic is going to have a much worse transition than most people do.  He is skilled, but very unathletic, and it often takes those types of players awhile to get use to the speed and athleticism of the league.  He has a very bright future, but I don't see him doing much of anything as wins are concerned this year.  They are also very thin.  I mean Salah Mejri is the only other center on the roster.  They have 3 PF's, Dirk, Dwight Powell and Maxi Kleber.  Dirk is what a 20 mpg player now.  You can't play Jordan in close games down the stretch, who exactly is going to be playing the 4/5 for the Mavs down the stretch of games.  Barnes is an ok player, but they have no back-up SF's worth anything.  They are have some depth at guard with Smith, Doncic, Matthews, and 100 year old Barea (I suspect they bring back Ferrell as well, but who knows), but that isn't a big time winning backcourt (though I like the potential of Smith and Doncic long term).

The Mavs just aren't going to be a good team.  Even in the East, they are no where near a playoff team, but in the West they are going to end up with a bottom 3 or 4 record.
