This feels like a smart move for both teams. If Atlanta really likes Young that much, getting a Dallas pick for next season (I read top 5 protected) and still getting their guy is smart. Whether or not Young is actually worth that high of a pick, I'll leave to others.

For Dallas, I like the trade, too. Doncic has "best player in the draft" potential, I think he fits well with Dennis Smith Jr. and if the pick is top 5 protected in what has been reported as a pretty weak draft then they might not have given up much to get a cornerstone wing.

I think the Hawks GM tried to pull a Danny Ainge Tatum deal and got robbed instead.

Not sure I like it from Atlanta's point of view. They are basically betting they are smarter than every other team. Generally, this draft seemed to fall into some combination of: top 2 tier (ayton, doncic), 2 person second tier (Bagley, Jackson Jr) OR a top 3 tier of Ayton, Doncic, Bagley) with a 1 person second tier (Jackson Jr) OR a 4 person top tier (Ayton, Doncic, Bagley, Jackson Jr). So you have to be really confident in you against the grain analysis to trade out of that top 4 bracket.

This seems different from last year, where there was more of a Fultz/Tatum/Ball/Jackson tier, and just swapping around within that tier.

He didn't get robbed either way.

He got good value to move down two picks, if the trade is a "bad" one its because the Hawk's GM evaluations of Trae Young/Luka Doncic was wrong.

If it truly was a Tatum situation and they were going to take Young if they did not have a deal set up they just got a pick for knowing that Young was going to be there at 5.

I think this year there was a clear top 8 more so than a smaller top tier like it typically is. MPJ fell out of it because clearly the doctor's didn't like what they saw with his back.

I do like Doncic a lot and was hoping the C's would get him at #2 if they got extremely lucky with the Lakers pick.

Dallas seems like a better environment for Doncic to reach his potential, especially with Dirk there to take him under his wing, so I'm glad he wound up there instead of whatever Atlanta's trying to do now. Don't have a strong opinion on the guy but I'm intrigued to see how his game translates and Dallas will be a great environment for that.

I think he's going to hate Dennis Smith.

But then again I don't really see what so many others do in Smith.

I love it for Dallas. Doncic and Smith Jr. is a foundational backcourt.

Hawks trying to be like the Baby Golden State Warriors...

Young

We'll see if Young can handle being Steph.

I think the Hawks GM tried to pull a Danny Ainge Tatum deal and got robbed instead.

The difference though is that Tatum was on zero teams radar as the #1 pick/best player in the draft,
and Ainge said he was worth that #1 pick, so he maximized the trade return in exchange for exactly who they wanted. Fultz obviously had much higher value on draft night.

Atlanta TRADED the guy that many consider the best player in the draft, and moved down to draft a player who likely would have been on the board in the lower half of the top 10. Maybe Orlando would have made the pick of Young at 6?

Atlanta should have got more IMO, under the idea that Doncic at #3 in this draft would have been the #1 pick in 9 out of 10 other drafts. It’s a pretty similar return we got from Philly, but the risk seems a little higher based on the evaluations of Doncic (who easily would help Atlanta) compared to Young, who could be a bust based on his lack of size.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to watch the draft, so I don't know exactly when the trade happened. However, after Young walked onto the stage in a suit with shorts for the Dallas pick, I would have immediately voided the trade if I was Atlanta. Oh, hell no!

Still can't believe Marvin Bagley III went 2nd, over Luka Doncic.

I think it was a terrible move for the Hawks and continues the trend of top tier talent going West.

Doncic was low risk/high reward and Young is super high risk/high reward.

IMO, Steph Curry is an anomaly that will not be so easily duplicated.
