Yep, another shooting today.
Today a Florida man shot 4 children, ranging in age between 1 and 11, before taking his own life.

Sadly, this crazy lunatic would have killed the kids one way or another. The gun isnít the relevant part of this story.

Happened about a half-mile from where I live (right next to Universal Studios - fwiw, Dr. Phillips is actually considered a really nice area). After the officer was shot, there were literally about 50-75 police cars out in front of the apartment building/street where the incident occurred. They sat around all day, seemingly doing 'something'...but I guess they cared more about one of their own being shot than actually trying to help the children being held up by this lunatic.

And, I understand that he may have killed them anyway, but after ~24 hours, law enforcement still had no idea about the well-being of the children(?). With so many officers, shouldn't somebody have been close enough to hear gun shots earlier in the day when they were actually killed? Orlando doesn't have the best track record of taking action in an emergency (how many Pulse victims would have lived had they received medical care earlier?)

Incredibly sad event that couldn't have ended in a worse way. And the media was insane, just f-ing go away!As usual, guns, but the 2nd amendment is too tough to crack.

Ignorant statement. No way to know this. Guns make it much easier to kill people. Maybe one or two of the kids could have gotten away if he was chasing them with a knife or bat. Gun nuts look for any excuse to say "nothing can prevent crazy people from murder," so they can deflect attention from the fact that their favorite toys facilitate those murders.

Lol. Iím far from a ďgun nutĒ.  Whenever clearly crazy people kill their own children, though, I donít blame the gun.  Susan Smith, Chris Benoit and plenty of others found a way to murder their families without guns.

Sure, but the point is it is a lot easier with a gun and far more likely to have "success".

Not really in these circumstances. A knife works just as well as a gun when murdering children in a confined area.

The focus should be on mental health, more focus on protection orders (many jurisdictions donít have 24 hour access to a judge / magistrate for protection orders), and how SWAT can be improved in these situations.

Unless weíre banning all guns, talking about gun control here is pointless.  Even then, a nut in a confined area can make due with a knife, hammer, hatchet, brick, boxcutter, their bare hands, or even a bathtub.

We don't know for sure, but the plan was probably not to murder his children. After his significant other ran out to call the police to report a domestic violence incident (leaving her two children behind), he then shot a police officer before barricading himself in the apartment with the four children. At the very least, the arrest would have gone much more smoothly had he not had a gun - never mind being able to save the children much sooner.

He was obviously a crazy person to let this escalate the way it did, but he was a crazy person with a gun which led to 5 deaths and a critically wounded police officer. It didn't have to be this way.

To quote myself, I think this is absolutely nuts. In NJ a Judge was assigned to be ďon dutyĒ 24/7 on a rotating basis for emergencies.

In Maine, you can get a protection order M-F, 8-4.  Itís an insane system.

If youíre in the frame of mind to murder your children, I find it unlikely that the gun will be the determining factor.

The US has done nothing to change the existing conditions and laws, so of course there was another shooting. And so it will continue until changes are made.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy ó not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.
