Kyrie Irving can be a free agent in 2019 and the Boston Celtics may retain Terry Rozier until they receive a commitment from Irving.

Rozier is scheduled to be a restricted free agent in 2019 as well.

"I think they're scared," said Chris Mannix. "I think they're scared and should be scared to some degree of Kyrie Irving walking in 2019. I know he had a great year, but you know there are people in Cleveland that will tell you that the Knicks should be considered a real threat for Kyrie Irving. Because Kyrie had talked about it, about playing with the Knicks with some players in that Cleveland locker room from what I was told.

"You know things can change. Obviously you go to Boston and you become the face of the franchise. You're on a winning team. Maybe the mindset has changed significantly?"

That is what I have been saying all along- Terry stays until we know for sure- If Kyrie is going to leave then trading him now makes more sense or lose him for nothing. He is a wild card and Danny and him need to get on same page soon.

As a former Yankees fan, I take no joy in saying this, but in terms of durability, dude is the Celtic version of Carl Pavano, lol ;D. Ugh.

So based on, well, nothing really? Alright then

trade him.  danny will get something really good.  guy is hurt all the time
That must be why he's played approximately 79% of the regular season games he could have.

Almost 4/5 games is hardly hurt all the time, lol

Do the Celtics have concern or is this just speculation? Hard to tell here

Would he leave money on the table, and sign an extension early, in return for a no-trade clause?

Shams Charania replied to Mannix's assertion with the expectation from Irving that he would be with the Celtics over the long-term.

"I know Kyrie Irving's mindset when the trade happened was 'Boston is my home for the foreseeable future.'

I like Mannix, but I’ll take reporting from Shams or Woj over him any day.

EDIT: And Mannix is comparing apples and oranges. Of course he was dreaming of greener pastures in Cleveland, but now he’s the face of the most storied franchise in NBA history that is set up better for the next decade than any other team in the league. Does anyone really think he’s going to drop a Max contract here to go play in New York with that team?

I already posted a similar thread

Danny and Celts dealt with extremely bad luck/all things that could go wrong, went wrong

Because otherwise you had a legit shot to win it all this season

If this happened, there would have been a much higher chance that Irving stays long term

Now either the Celts ride with Irving even if he just wants to play it out for next season (hope that winning a championship motivates him to stay another 4-5 years) ... or he actually wants to remain a Celtic regardless

Imo I think Irving will be traded (or a decent chance a trade will be explored) . Unfortunately no team is going to give up a ton for a guy coming off surgery + people know where his heart is at (all indication is Knicks).   Maybe the best thing to do would be to trade him to the Knicks.  Best return I can see the Celts able to get is 2018 9th pick,  Frank Ntilikina and a future 1st

Unless Sham is psychic.

yes but NYC - city/market is huge

Danny should sit down with Irving soon and ask what his intention/plans are

nothing short of "I want to be with the Celtics a long time" ....  Danny needs to "think" about trading him.  Not saying he should , because one season of Kyrie = championship potential...would be worth it, to lose him for nothing the season after ( though chances drop that this happens, in this case)

The Jackie Mac piece earlier this year scared the crap out of me. Made it seem like kyrie had little say in coming to Boston, gets really stir crazy easily and has always been a spontaneous type constantly looking for new challenges.

The bigger concern is that he and jimmy butler are very close and both hit free agency at the same time.  Kyrie was interested in getting traded to Chicago when butler was there and was interested in getting traded to the wolves once butler got moved.  Those two teaming up in New York or Los Angeles is my biggest worry.
