De'Anthony Melton, a 6'3 195lb defensive-minded guard out of USC
Small 2-guard with impressive physical profile and defensive potential ... Good court vision, knows how to push the ball in the open floor, quick release on his passes, able to find guys in the open floor for easy transition buckets ... Very accurate passer ... Very good rebounder for a guard (4.7 RPG), has good instincts and knows how to generate offense off of his defensive boards ... Very unselfish and a willing passer (3.5 APG) ... Eager to make the right basketball play ... Plays hard on defense, has the quickness and speed to recover in the open floor ... Has good instincts on defense, reads passing lanes well (1.9 steals), tremendous speed in the open floor

"Melton looked to be on the verge of a breakout season for USC before the FBI's investigation into recruiting shut him down indefinitely," ESPN's Jonathan Givony wrote. "His defensive versatility, toughness and intangibles make him a prospect worth investing in."

The Ringer's Kevin O'Connor sees shades of Marcus Smart in Melton, meaning the latter could be a cheap replacement option should the former prove too costly.

Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman linked three other names to Boston.

I'm all for good defense, but I guess I've been conditioned in such a way that anytime I see a player described as "defensive minded," I think, "Oh, that means he sucks on offense," and for me, that's not an attractive thought.

Yeah, but when I see his weight at 195 I think there isn't many players he can actually cover, which is one of Smart's best attributes.
