There have been three stories that have made nationals news lately, claiming very specific police misconduct.  All were lies:

http://cw39.com/2018/05/24/body-cam-video-disproves-dallas-area-womans-sexual-assault-accusation-against-police-officer/amp/

https://www.dallasnews.com/news/mckinney/2018/05/23/mckinney-councilman-alleged-racial-profiling-apologizes-joins-colleagues-approving-reprimand

A suburban city counselor, a local head of the NAACP, and a “mother and a corporate professional”.  All made up elaborate hoaxes with close to zero basis in truth.

Thank God for body cams. Why do this, especially publicly?

For the first time, I gave you a TP...oh, don't take me wrong, it's not because I haven't agreed with a lot of your posts in the past.  It's just that with all those stars and TP's already, I felt my contribution meant little.   ;D

But this post deserved one.

People lie....all people lie...this is a truth.

Some have made a career out of it, others do it sporadically...but all people lie.  The older I've gotten, the more I've realized that it's only by telling the truth as much as humanly possible can people really have peace...whether that truth is embarassing to them or not.

agreed.  they certainly can expose the BS on both sides of the story -- provided they're left on for the whole incident in question

Body cameras are a great thing - it holds all sides accountable. Why people need to lie about these types of things is beyond me - it's not like there aren't enough real examples out there. I guess it all comes down to getting your 15 minutes of fame.

Yeah, people seem absolutely desperate to get a little bit of spotlight. Pretty ridiculous

Imagine that, Humans lying. Almost as inconceivable as Humans killing each other. Social media coverage makes these normal things even more prevalent now. I jadan old friend who said if she could, she would lie to get a certain president in hot water- sure she is not alone either— so many people coming out woodwork with truth or fiction about so many people.

Harder and harder to tell what is truth from fiction anymore- Our moral compass is severely broken and it is a pity that humanity cannot find their way out of our thousands of years of programming.

I guess no different then old witch hunts and claming they saw the witches do things that are impossible followed by burning and death as a result- Mass hysteria of more people coming out and saying same thing-

It’s shameful if those stories about police misconduct were made up.

It would be very wrong to conclude that all the lying is on one side of this issue.

Respectfully Roy - what country have you been living in the past 30 years ?

This is nothing new. Tawana Brawley, Michael Brown, the Chipman Street 5, Trayvon Martin, Stephon Clark, Duke Lacrosse, to name but a few liars.

Don’t forget Ashley Todd: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/cops-mccain-worker-made-up-attack-story/

Or the Central Park 5.

I suppose next you’re going to tell me the two young men who were arrested for being in Starbucks while black aren’t  real?

Hoaxes are a shame, but there's zero doubt cams have caught terrible behavior and abuse, too.

This makes about as much sense as linking to a couple of false rape accusations to imply rape is rare.

I believe the main topic intended was direct police-suspects incidents, not general news stories about people lying about their crimes.

Fair enough. I responded that way because you threw out a series of examples that went broader. The man who killed the unarmed teenager, Trayvon Martin, was George Zimmerman - not a police officer. The Duke Lacrosse team story was about drunken frat boy misconduct, not police misconduct. Even the Tawana Brawley case was a false accusation by a 15-year old girl that six white men, only one of whom was a police officer, had raped her. What you were saying, it seemed to me, was that accusations of racism or frat boy behavior have been made up and highly publicized for 30 years.

The examples I came up with were the opposite to the ones you brought up. They weren’t just generalized stories of people lying about their crimes. They were highly publicized stories in which a white person made up a lie that a black person had attacked him or her.

And to tie it back, I also referred to the recent Starbucks incident, where two young men were arrested simply because of their race. They did nothing wrong, whatsoever.

I could have named other, much worse, instances where police were more directly involved. Like Walter Scott - the black driver who was shot in the back. The officer filed a false report and the department’s initial public statements backed him up. If there had been no video, that man’s summary execution - shot in the back - would have gone unpunished. That one woke me up, big time.

My point is - While the OP is right that some accusations are false, it would be wrong to be generally dismissive of all such accusations. That they’re all made up. And to me, that is how your post read. The body cameras are not perfect, but hopefully will improve things.

(In case you are counting Zimmerman as an officer because he was in neighborhood watch - have you tracked how many police reports he has been the subject of since the shooting? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Zimmerman)
