Al Horford quarterbacks the best defense in the league, but only makes it onto the 2nd team.

Smart and Brown both received 1st Team All-Defense votes, but neither of them made it. Thought both were more deserving than Murray or Butler on a 12th ranked Spurs/TWolves defense.

Amazingly, Baynes didn't even get a single vote.

2nd team seems fair. Horford is a better defender than a guy like Covington, but with Gobert and Davis ahead of him, it's hard to justify a 1st team selection.

I know the analytics people love him, but I think Covington is really overrated as a defender.

I’m glad Horford got recognized. Jaylen should have.

Unbelievable. When are they going to start respecting the Celtics..

It's based on your perspective, quite simply

Son, I ain't better than you, I just think different

Good for Al.  Of course, the "Average Al" crowd only looks at offensive numbers and will brush this aside.  ::)

Most on this board think Smart is 1st team All-Defense and yet he just is never looked at that way nationally. Homerism?

If he isn't looked at as All-Defense across the league and is an atrocious offensive player, do the Celtics really have a problem in retaining him for cheap?

Yeah the Covington love seems suspect. He got dominated on the defensive end that series and if you can't defend in big games I don't think you belong on first team all defense.

I get kind of annoyed when I see the Sixers have two first team all defensive players yet Boston has none, by that alone you would think that they had the better defense.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz

Smart's been all-defense before. I look at him as similar to Roberson and Beverly who have also been all-defense, are similarly recognized as superior defenders, are offensively challenged, and, according to Roberson's contract signed last summer, are worth about $10MM per year. Smart makes more highlight reel plays than the other two, but he also makes more bonehead plays too.

Murray’s the most surprising inclusion imo

Voting for All-Defense is always pretty suspect. I mean, Russell Westbrook got votes this year, mostly because he was a good defender 5 or 6 seasons ago.

It has more to do with him primarily coming off the bench than anything. He still received five first team votes and more votes than any other Celtic than Al. He was the highest voted bench player, and the only other bench player to even have a first team vote was Mbah a Moute with one vote.

He's clearly a top-3 guard perimeter defender in this league, regardless of whether he makes the All-Defensive Team.

LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard (?!) got votes this year; that should tell you enough right there.
