Our 3 refs tonight are Ken Mauer, Ed Malloy and Jason Phillips, with Tony Brothers in the replay center (and thankfully not on the court?).

http://official.nba.com/referee-assignments/

Ken Mauer - His key trend is that favorites are 4-0 ATS in the 2nd Round and Conference Finals.  As of right now, Cleveland is at a consensus -1 for the game, but it may become a pick em, in which case this trend is hard to apply here.  Here's fair in home/away W-L splits (5-4).

Ed Malloy - The only real standouts with him is that home teams are 4-1 outright, which is good, and favorites are just 2-3 ATS, which also looks to at least not be bad.  But he's Ref #2 tonight while Mauer is #1, so his trends shouldn't potentially dictate game flow at much.

Overall, I think this looks like the NBA is putting in refs that will let them play a pretty fair game.  They didn't put Brothers on the floor, and these refs if they have any biases, look to just favor favorites and home teams at times, so they aren't Scott-Foster like series extenders.

What are your thoughts?  Tin foil hat stuff?  Good betting insight?  Interesting, but coincidental?

Hope the Cs play well enough that the refs don’t matter. They did not decide any of the games so far.

Nope, I agree, not so far, but the trends are real.

Ed Molloy annoys the hell out of me for some reason, but I'm not too worried by those 3

We need to wrap this up in 6 because they're going to put Brothers in game 7 for sure.

The nba wants both of these series to go 7

Secretly I believe they want the Rockets to make the finals and dont care who from the east comes out (maybe edge to Lebron due to marketing)

I'm also glad that the entire NBA fandom approaches games like they're WWE matches predicting which one McMahon wants to win.

Referees should be independent of the league in every sport, just like they hire independent people to do the draft lottery. So they admit that they need to have public perception of neutrality in such an important event. Why is refereeing somehow less important to remain completely neutral?

You feel very confident of that?  Who do you think wins the game tonight?

If you look at this in an unbiased manner purely from a marketing standpoint, milking Lebron's likely last run in Cleveland at this stage of his career for all its worth makes the most sense. The Celtics young guys are going to have a decade to be used for marketing. People are just getting to know them, this has been a good introduction to the general fanbase for future marketing of them.

On the west, yeah, people are tired of the Warriors, marketing Harden and also Paul's likely last shot at a title is more valuable.

All fans complain about the refs.

Only Celtic fans know the names of the refs and write breakdowns of each one prior to playoff games. I love/hate this.

Tony Brothers will find a way to give all close balls to the Cavs even if it should be in Celtics' favor.

The NBA would be so much more enjoyable if the refs were not such an issue.

Regardless if it's intentional or not, there's a reason why people pay attention to who is reffing.

All fans of every sport complain about officiating at some point, many feel certain teams/players get special treatment. However, I don't think any of the 3 other major sports have as big of a problem with people calling its integrity into question.

I believe this is one reason the NBA doesn't have as many fans as it could.
Still don't believe in Joe.

Not confident enough to advise you to bet on it (I don't gamble myself). But if we're just talking, I feel like Celtics by about 10. I was telling my wife that Game 4 was *very* winnable by the Celtics. I don't see them doing the same mistakes at home.

Bold prediction: The game will be decided by whichever team's supporting cast is hitting shots, not by the refs.

The Celtics shoot better at home.
Celtics win.
