Didnt he have a no trade clause

So did KG...
Kobe didn't have a PP equivalent to talk him into accepting it though, did he?

I don’t think PP had anything to tell him. Paul new he was getting traded, regardless. Whether KG wanted to join leave as well was his choice to make. He decided to leave because it was best for him and the franchise. Doc already left. Pierce was gone.

Kobe needed a teammate to persuade him what was best for his career and the franchise he cares about?

Do you think this is true? I don't think there was a scenario where kg refused and paul was still traded. It had to be both or nothing

Knowing the way Ainge seems to operate I think it's safe to assume Pierce would have been traded somewhere regardless of whether or not KG refused to waive his NTC.  I doubt KG would have wanted to stay once that happened, and Ainge knew this, thus why he held all the cards in that situation and was able to convince KG to waive his NTC and go with Pierce to Brooklyn.

I'm just going off what I remember from the time, and I remember this article.

I'm also not sure if Kobe would have viewed him being traded as best for his career or the Lakers, because that just doesn't seem like him

yeah but it was in the contract they are talking about.  The question posed was either sign and trade him or let him walk. It was not just trade him.

With Jim Buss and Kupchak in charge, I don't think trading Kobe would have mattered.

They shouldn't have signed Kobe to his last, huge contract. Very bad decision.

When you give a player at his tweelight so much money, it's p clear he's staying with your franchise till the end.

But if they traded him, they would've been giving up the valuable mentoring Kobe gave the new young Lakers in his final days...

They could have easily used that salary room to get extra picks, take shots at borderline players or value deals, and used the minutes/shots to develop more talent.

The opportunity cost of that final Kobe contract was pretty large. If they had gotten lucky and had a good GM they could be closer to the 76ers/Celtics asset rich position.

The Lakers are in an okay place anyways, and given how Kupchek blew it with Deng/Mosgov later I can see viewing it as irrelevant in the end if I was a Lakers fan.

Extending Kobe slowed down the Lakers rebuild by 2 years.

They got a sleeper pickup in Kuzma who is gonna be a good player.  But they have to pray desperately that Lonzo Ball works out or they are going to suck the next 5 years or so.

They did the right thing keeping Kobe and trying to hit in free agency.

What they did wrong was mortgage their future picks in useless trades like the Steve Nash one, incredibly short sighted, even more so than the Nets trades. Take out a few of their bad trades and the Lakers would be looking at a very positive future right now..
