What do you guys think? I have some sporadic thoughts about it.

To me this marks the difference in the franchises right now. I couldn't believe the contract extension they gave a hobbled Bryant at the time. But then I could believe it, it was the Lakers who were suppose to be able to expedite their way back into contention by signing major free agents. That didn't happen. Many believe that Kobe being on the roster played a role in players not wanting to go there. Kobe also took up a huge cap number. Anyway, I'm looking for help unpacking this. What marks the difference between the two clubs now? Is it simply the Nets trade, us moving our HoF players for picks while the Lakers stood pat? Is it the conference?

What to other Celtics fans think?

Kobe put up 60 points in the final game of his career.

The contract extension was WORTH IT...to Lakers fans!

Only if it’s to a championship contender and he agreed to it like Paul and Kevin did. You can’t sell out your legends.

Who would've traded for him?

Danny Ainge...

It would be so like him.  He's a funnier guy (and prankster) than most think. :)

Yeah, I can't exactly see many teams lining up for him at that time. He should have retired after he tore his achilles, imo.

Kobe as a ticket draw alone had tremendous value for an NBA franchise

Could they have gotten a Nets type trade for Kobe? What would the trade have been? Were there offers?

If giving those extra 2 years to Kobe after his Achilles injury helps any in their prime max level future free agent sign with the Lakers they will probably be happy with the decision.
4 years is not a great deal of time in grand scheme of things.
Show any future talent that is how we will reward you being the face of the Lakers , that line of thinking.

SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

I'm sure it set them back a bit, but somehow I imagine most Lakers fans actually appreciated getting to watch Kobe finish out his career in LA.

In the grand scheme of things it was probably the right thing to do (keeping Kobe).  There's something to be said for having loyalty to a player like that.

Kobe didn't have a PP equivalent to talk him into accepting it though, did he?
