Opposing players have shot better against Covington than they have their averages.
Meanwhile, Jaylen has held opponents to 7.0 percentage points below their averages. That’s second in the NBA, behind only Embiid.
Great stat find.
When I evaluate defensive abilities Net DFG% is always the first stat I look at.
Then I usually look at turnovers created per possession (steals + charges drawn).
Next I look at defensive rebound rate on contested rebounds (I'm not terribly concerned with uncontested rebounds).
I'll also look at defensive hustle stats (deflections + loose balls won).
The things I almost never loot at anymore are raw block totals (this is already accounted for in your Net DFG%), or any of the catch all stats (DRtg, DBPM, DWS, DRPM).
The only flaw I've found in this methodology is that it doesn't really account for times when your man beats you off the dribble and forces a help defender to pick up your man, or losing a player coming off a screen. For this video evidence is still necessary. I have no doubt NBA teams have tracking data on this, but they're not sharing that with the public, unfortunately.
