Sadly, there may be a “save the forums” drive coming soon.

There will be more details to come, but long-term we have three options:

1. Take the forums independent;

2. Latch on to another blog;

3. Close down.

More or less what I've suspected for a while now.

Hopefully it's not #3.  That would be truly unfortunate.

I thought the SBNation transfer way back when was conditional on preserving the forums. I guess the plan was all along to just keep it alive while there was enough critical mass to keep the blog alive without the forum...

Yeah, I'm guessing the front page of CB has enough unique members now that Vox Media no longer feels compelled to keep the forums alive.  Even if they alienated every forum user, and we all boycotted the front page, I'm guessing it wouldn't hurt them in the least.

And you know, kudos to Jeff Clark for taking an idea and building it into what he did.  He should be proud.  But it's still going to be sad to see the forums no longer a part of that.

Would it ever be possible to separate the forum from the SB Nation site?  I.e. Export all the forum data and port it over to a freestanding forum site?  That might require a bit of capital to do.  I for one wouldn't mind a one time shared fee for all of us to allow the forum to be disconnected from SB nation.  Say if we all had to pay a one time fee of $40 to pay for the migration of the forum is that just a non-starter?

This is one of my fav sites on the net, but if we all have continual issues with access then don't we need to look at other options?

I really would hate to see #3. It’s like hearing that your favorite pub is being torn down and replaced by Applebee’s.

Option 3 will be really unfortunate. Where else am I going to find such a large group of people willing  to put up with my garbage?

Apparently that promise must have had a time limit. You’re not the only one who feels a bit misled about that, but such is life.

btw ...none of the other Celtics blogs are anywhere as good as this one ....its not even close.   I don't see very many other NBa team forums that come close to this one.

i like the tight run ship on this blog .  The front page is always updated and great read as are most contributors.

I hope Jeff stays with it .

They better not do away with the forums, as they are, unquestionably, the best part of this site. Seriously, I never even go to the front page, I just come straight here. More to the point, if this does get removed, what happens to my Tommy Points - you know, the only reason for my continued existence ;) ;D? Sigh. Should we all just exchange contact information or something? I love this place. Please don't make me go to Reddit, lol ;D.

Now where's that copy-and-paste angry email on here regarding the forums? Be right back...;D

"Bathroom Break" needs to be added as an option to this pole, lol ;D.

That said, and despite the fact that it had been pretty slow over the last two days, the speed seems to be back to normal since the creation of this thread. Hmm...

Honestly, though, guys, if we're going to even try to implement any kind of a boycott with respect to the front page, just bookmark the forums on your browser as opposed to entering the, well, forums via the front page. I've been doing that for years, now, and maybe if we're all in lockstep, here, SB Nation would at least notice that a significant number of users, and the most senior ones, at that, are bypassing the front page altogether in favor of the forums, but I doubt that that makes a difference. Thoughts?

Besides, if this place goes :'(, how am I going to oblige Tarheels' request for self Tommy Pointification ;D even though I have yet to do so, lol ;D.

Well that's bad news.  Maybe start a GoFundMe for C'sBlog?  Although I don't see anyone voluntarily dishing out money when they can simply go somewhere else for free such as real GM, or post via FaceBook on the site's articles.

I myself just registered for a real GM account.  The connectivity issues here are just too much.

Out of curiosity, would option #1 lead to a migration to a new server provider/software?

I really enjoy and appreciate this forum as a place to discuss the NBA and the Celtics in particular; but the limitations and formatting of the core forum software make it rather difficult to be much more than a casual lurker here.  I'm not sure if this is a Vox thing because I don't use any of their other sites, but I'd gladly pitch in some change if it led to becoming an indy community running on a smoother interface like Invision Community.

I don’t know.  I’m open to ideas.

Internally, there was discussion years ago about moving to new software, but there was resistance because things like username, post count, TPs, etc. weren’t transferable.

Put ads on this site and help pay for better performance.  I totally agree with this.

I do not know too many sites that don't do this. Even SonsofSamHorn added an amazon link so they could help pay for things.

I would rather not lose the ability to post here and die waiting for a page to load. Put Ads on this site!

this site needs to become a pay site or accept donations. simple fix.

Oh, I suppose that makes sense; I've heard of boards switching out software but it probably happened earlier in their histories when those things were of less consequence.

Count me as one who would gladly give up all TPs and post numbers to have a readily accessible site.

Post counts are definitely overrated. Having a billion posts doesn't confer on you or imply any special knowledge, insight or even experience per se.

In fact, the stars are fun but not essential to the site experience for me.

And TPs?, really are fun and people (I'm speaking for myself) have fun garnering them and wagering them, but their value is less than they once were. Here's one reason why:

As an aside, one way to give someone multiple TPs at once (before the karma notice kicks in) is to to keep hitting the "giveth one" button multiple times when the site is loading up, and until it loads, it
keeps registering TPs. My ADD "helped" me discover that. Needless to say, the patience required  to wait for this site to load sometime and my ADD are not real compatible. Haha.

Pfff, I haven't really been on the front page in months. It's poorly organized, full of syndicated national content and has a ton of articles by people I don't know. That's no longer a blog, it's a media outlet -- and not a very good one at that.

In general, it seems that over the past decade or so blogging has transformed from a platform for enlightened fans into a refuge of lazy journalism. I miss the time when I could read Jeff and Roy's thoughts on how Al Jefferson and Kendrick Perkins are putting it all together... but just like my 20s that isn't coming back :P
