Every eligible former league MVP has made the HOF.  It seems an almost certainty that when Rose retires he won't make the HOF, but the question is, will Nash make it in?  The other non-HOF eligible MVP winners (whether retired or active) are: Shaq, TD, KG, Kobe, Lebron, Dirk, Durant, Curry, and Westbrook (they are all going to get in and all probably unanimous or near-unanimous in their 1st year).

So you are a voter for the basketball HOF, is Nash getting your vote?

Yes. There are worse players in the Hall of Fame. That's the criteria that I would use. I would let a lot of players in using this method, considering that the NBA has so much more talent than in the 60's, for example.

Mitch Richmond was just included in 2014. Richmond was a very good player. I think Nash was better.

Nash was the engine of a majority of the most prolific offenses in league history.  He's definitely a deserving HOFer.

I say yes. 8x all-star, 7x all-NBA, 5x assist leader, 2x MVP, one of the NBA's all-time great FT shooters (90.4%), and he shot 42.8% on threes for his career, which is ninth all-time.

Nash will definitely be in the HOF.

Besides being contrived fodder for sports talk radio "debates", is it really even a question?

Nash is definitely going in. Somewhat humorously, his wikipedia page lists him as a "2017 NBA champion". Had to do a double-take until I realized it says "as a consultant".

Nash is 100% in - thinking he won't make it seems to require the classic move of substituting the Hall as we wish it was for the Hall as it is.  I would be surprised if he wasn't first ballot.

Rose is trickier but I bet the veteran's committee eventually puts him in if the voters don't.

You think so? Is MVP/3x Allstar that impressive?

Nash won two MVP awards and had a career filled with accolades (as noted by rocknroll). I would be floored if he didn't make it; he seems like an absolute lock.

Derek Rose otoh has just about no chance. Very few MVPs in sports don't eventually make the Hall for their respective sport. This reminds me of Mo Vaughn - nice career with one huge year, but not a HOF resume.

FWIW, Basketball Reference has Nash's HOF probability at 98.3%.  61st overall.

Yeah, he's getting in.

Since I'm lazy - are there other examples of HOFers who had a big MVP year but then had their career derailed by injury?

I don't think so, no.  I wouldn't put him in if it was my choice.  But I think the veterans' committee will not want an MVP left out especially when serious injuries were the biggest reason for his decline.  I don't know if Rose is popular among players but if so that'll help his case a lot too. Just talking about what I think the Hall will do, not what I would want them to do.

Nope. I looked into myself, and even posed the same question 2-3 years ago when Rose was on the steady decline, and everyone seemed to agree that Rose is the only one.
