I saw this on NBC Sports Boston last night. The panelist on the show picked their own teams, and there was a voting page on twitter to see who had the best team. Well, I figured why not have fun with this on celticsblog.

Make your starting lineup consisting of 3 forwards and 2 guards. You have 15 points to spend. You can even pick players from the same group.

Forward (Group 1): Bill Russell (5), Dave Cowens (4), Robert Parish (3), Al Hortford (2), Kendrick Perkins (1)

Forward (Group 2): Kevin Garnett (5), Kevin McHale (4), Tom Heinsohn (3), Tom Sanders (2), Antoine Walker (1)

Forward (Group 3): Larry Bird (5), John Havlicek (4), Paul Pierce (3), Reggie Lewis (2), Cedric Maxwell (1)

Guard (Group 1): Bob Cousy (5), Kyrie Irving (4), Dennis Johnson (3), Rajon Rondo (2), KC Jones (1)

Guard (Group 2): Sam Jones (5), Ray Allen (4), Jo Jo White (3), Isaiah Thomas (2), Danny Ainge (1)

Let’s assume each player is in their prime. Also, to make it a little more interesting, pick a team based on different eras.

Today's game of 3 and D:

Al Hortford (2)
Larry Bird (5)
Reggie Lewis (2)
Ray Allen (4)
Rajon Rondo (2)

I had to start my team with my favorite player, Larry Bird, and had to figure out the rest of the team from there. We may have some rebounding issues, but I feel the team can run and shoot with anybody (with Rondo being the shooting exception).

Assuming it’s everyone in their prime. This team would 3peat in most eras. Might struggle with those teams with size in the 80’s/90’s but their versatility on offense would be unstoppable. Defensively I think they would be able to get the job done, or atleast do a good enough job to out score their opponents. This team dominates any team in this modern era.

It would be fun swapping McHale for Pierce in the 3 point world now.  Pierce would balance this team perfectly for todays game.

Yeah and in today's game Bird is a 6'9" Steph Curry who tears the league apart. I think this team would be unstoppable.

C - Cowens (4)
F - Garnett (5)
F - Pierce (3)
G - Ainge (1)
G - Isaiah Thomas (2)

I love the idea of Cowens in today's league. I think he would tear it up. His rebounding would make a massive weapon. And him alongside KG would cement Boston as the toughest big man defensive combination in the league. Those two would create lots of extra possessions over their opponents with their defense and rebounding. Furthermore, both guys can post up, shoot, drive and pass on offense. They both create mismatches.

The perimeter guys - I wanted guys who can shoot. That is why I choose Isaiah over Rondo and KC Jones. I would've loved Jo Jo White instead of Isaiah but I was 1 point short. I briefly thought about swapping Pierce for Reggie Lewis but I greatly value Pierce's superior offensive arsenal (especially ball-handling and playmaking). And also considered KG for McHale which is perhaps worth doing.

C - Cowens (4)
F - McHale (4)
F - Pierce (3)
G - Ainge (1)
G - Jo Jo White (3)

But I stuck with KG because I loved the idea of Cowens and KG together as defensive anchors, dominanting rebounders and well-rounded offensive threats. McHale's post up game and scoring versatility would've made him a nightmare in today's league though .... (doubts)

Rondo (2)
Allen (4)
Pierce (3)
Mchale (4)
Horford (2)

I started my team around Pierce and Rondo, who were incredible value at 3 and 2 points, respectively. Since I took Rondo, I needed the most shooting I could get next to him, and who better than one of the best of all time, Ray Allen. Then I was left with either the choice of Russell and Antoine, or Horford and Mchale in the front court. I went with Mchale and Horford because they’re a great fit together in any era. This is a balanced team that could win in any era.
