What is Marcus Smart's Belichick era equivalent Patriots player?

I'm seeing some people say he just brings something special and unquantifiable to the team. He's obviously very polarizing. He makes some awful plays but also some plays that just nobody else ever makes.

So I asked myself what Patriots player is most like Smart.  I argued with myself I can't really pick a Pro Bowler because Smart's not an all star.

I'm having a hard time with this.

My candidates are

Koppen
Marcus Cannon
Bryan Cox
James Harrison
Brandon Spikes
Brandon Merriweather
Malcolm Butler
Blount
Chung

That's about all I could come up with and nothing really feels quite right to me

There’s no real equivalent of “great defense, historically bad offense” in the NFL. Those guys are All-Pro defenders in the NFL.

Good point I hadn't thought of it that way. I had thought of it like an intense player who makes good plays but also screws up in strange ways more than his fair share leading to diverse opinions.

Also hoped to come to a kind of consensus as to how important he is to the team. Mildly important? Very important?

Like for example watching David Andrews do what he does has made me wonder if I overvalue the center position on the line

That is very clever and interesting. Yeah. I'm going with that for the moment. Had issues. Stepped up big at certain points. Very emotional.  Definitely a TP for that
