Rob Porter, the Staff Secretary considered a rising figure in the White House, just resigned after both his former wives came forward to talk about repeated violent abuse during their marriages.

The women have also reported a later partner of Porter's contacted them for advice about the abuse. After the story broke, John Kelly and Orrin Hatch (Porter worked for him) both praised Porter and recommended he "keep fighting".  Sarah Sanders read a letter from Porter from the White House podium where he attacked the allegations but notably denied nothing.

It's since come out the FBI informed the White House of Porter's record in November - Porter couldn't even get a full security clearance because of an order of protection against him. They took no action til the press found out.

I have a lot of feelings about this but I guess the biggest one is whether there's any bottom anymore. Excusing (and probably enabling) a wifebeater on top of defenses of white supremacists and promoting child molesters for office. Where's the line? Is there one?

Also, while there are bigger stories out there, why are we hearing about this from the British press?

It should be a good starting place: if you canít pass a security clearance, you donít get a White House job.

That's a good starting point for a functional executive branch, but a good one overall is to not shield people that physically brutalize their partners, and definitely don't strongly vouch for them while ignoring their victims when they're found out by the public.

It's just unbelievable. They weren't even doing the "if true then X Y and Z" dance.  Just defending him.

That is basic good sound advice.  I agree 100%.

haha unfortunately the Trump Administration doesn't work that way.  I mean how many people have been fired / resigned / charged with crimes / struck plea deals.  Trumpland is basically Mos Eisley.

If Kelly knew since Nov that there were these issues, then how can you defend keeping him on as well?
