Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn

New Orleans is planning to guarantee the $12.5M salary of Mirotic in the 2018-19 season, league sources tell ESPN. That clinched a deal. Omer Asik and a future first-rounder part of package to Bulls, league source tells ESPN.

Wow. Wonder if the pick is lottery protected...

Does this mean they are moving on from Cousins?

They have 95.3 million dollars committed to 9 players next year: Davis (25.4), Holliday (26.1), Hill (12.2), Mirotic (12.5), Moore (8.8 ), Miller (2.2), Ajinca (5.3), Diallo (1.5), and Jackson (1.4). Assuming the other 4 players of the roster make 5 million total, that puts them at 100 million. A max for Demarcus cousins would start at 30.9 in the first year. That puts them at 130.9.

The hard cap next year is roughly 129 million.

Obviously, they could trade Moore or Hill (if anyone wants them), or stretch Ajinca. But that is a thin team without the hope of winning next year, but still paying a luxury tax bill.

That doesn't include Monroe's cap hold or ability to resign him. Surely Monroe sees that he likely won't be resigned in NO?

First-round pick the Pelicans are sending Chicago in Mirotic trade is protected 1-5 in 2018, per source, with gradual easing of protections in subsequent years.

This is a good deal for the Pels. They get a starter level player who can help keep them in the playoffs this year and keep them afloat next year untill Cousins (assuming he resigns) returns. Then they also get off Asik contract and get a 2nd round puck back. That's about as good as you are gonna do.

From a numbers standpoint the Asik contract isn't bad because only 3M of the last year is guaranteed.  The Bulls did good to get a 1st with only top 5 protection for Mirotic.

good chance he'll find his way to okc

After Roberson's injury they need TA.  Hope they get him...

The 3M guaranteed isnt untill 19-20. So that means 14 million of entirely dead money for next year, 18-29. That is bad cnsideirng hes pretty much unplayable.

Good trade for New Orleans. Btw don't they have Ajinca as a backup center?
Jaylen Brown for All-NBA

He isn't expected to return this season after knee surgery in December.

No, that’s not what it means.  In 18-19, it’s $11 million.  If the Bulls need that cap space, they can stretch his contract to be a $2.8 million hit over 5 years.  If they do not need that money, they can keep him on the roster.  In the summer of 2019, his contract will have some actual value, as it is an expiring with a value of $12 million for trade purposes, but only has a cap hit of $3 million if he’s released.  It would not remotely surprise me if the Bulls were able to acquire something positive for Asik at next year’s trade deadline, draft, or July.
