Chicago and New Orleans don't need Mirotic's permission to make trade should his $12.5M team option in 2018-19 get guaranteed with a trade. Without that salary guaranteed prior to finalizing trade, teams need Mirotic to agree. Otherwise, Mirotic likely becomes a rental for Pels.

So wait, Mirotic actually wants to play on a $12.5 option?!

He would lose his birdrights and they're nearly hard capped. If they traded for him and then declined his option for next year to save themselves money, he could potentially lose a lot of money. NO would be restricted to the taxpayers MLE or the biannual, meaning he would lose negotiating ground on the open market.

Bill Simmons
@BillSimmons
--Asik has 3 years/$34 million left.
--Last June, the Bulls sold the rights to Jordan Bell for $3.5 million.
--8 months later, they'd be buying a mid-teens 1st round pick for $34 million.
--WHAT????????????????

 :)

Bill is wrong again.  After this year Asik would only be owed $14 million (he makes less than Mirotic this year, so can't count that).

I'm afraid of this deal happening:

Chicago trades: Nikola Mirotic
Chicago receives: Omer Asik Tony Allen and a first

New Orleans trades: Omer Asik Tony Allen and a 1st
New Orleans receives: Derrick Favors

Utah trades: Derrick Favors
Utah receives: Nikola Mirotic

I think Favors would be the Celtics best option on the buy-out market with the DPE, but if he's traded to the Pelicans, they wouldn't buy him out since he's a good fill-in for Cousins.

Bulls have decided that Niko Mirotic will not play again until the trade deadline passes as the organization continues working on finding a deal that makes sense for both sides.

Sounds like someone will be available in the buyout market.

Quoting myself here, but I wanted to add that Mirotic has been having a terrific year, albeit with a bit of a small sample size, and would be my number 1 buyout target with the DPE.  His defense doesn’t always have the best rep, but he’s a terrific rebounder and is shooting 47% from 3 on a lot of attempts.  Better version of Olynyk in my opinion, and could really help with the bench scoring woes.  Averaging 24/9 for those who like per 36 numbers with a 47/43/82 shooting split.

More minutes for Portis, good for my fantasy team. There's a long way to make up for DeMarcus Cousins' injury.

They are saying Mirotic nixed the deal? Interesting move.

New Orleans is planning to guarantee the $12.5M salary of Mirotic in the 2018-19 season, league sources tell ESPN. That clinched a deal. Omer Asik and a future first-rounder part of package to Bulls, league source tells ESPN.

Yikes, not good for our chances with Monroe  :-\

Chicago could take one or two more minimum expiring players in the trade, which would help create roster space for Pels to sign Greg Monroe too, league sources tell ESPN. Bulls send a second round pick and the right to exchange seconds in the 2021 Draft with Pelicans.

Not sure why Monroe would want to go to NO...They are going nowhere in the west...can get more money in Boston, get the same or more minutes and be an important piece to winning big

Pels still need to make an additional move to afford Monroe I think.  They’re too close to the hard cap if Bobby Marks has it correct earlier this year.  They literally couldn’t have done the Mirotic deal without sending Tony Allen because the $1.9 million more that Mirotic makes over Asik put them above the hard cap.  TA was not included just to make room for Monroe.  Woj is good in scoops, but the cap details often elude him.
