New Orleans and Chicago had a deal for Nikola Mirotic, but it's fallen apart for now, league sources tell ESPN.

Chicago and New Orleans don't need Mirotic's permission to make trade should his $12.5M team option in 2018-19 get guaranteed with a trade. Without that salary guaranteed prior to finalizing trade, teams need Mirotic to agree. Otherwise, Mirotic likely becomes a rental for Pels.

Wow. Good on the Pelicans. Nice short term move.

It still means Davis will be playing center, which may mean more nagging injuries, but it helps their playoff run.

At the same time, the Pelicans cupboard is looking more and more bare.

Sounds like a good deal for both sides.  Asik was collecting dust on the bench, but wait...Boogie gone for the year so that is odd.

Another pick gone for the Pels.  They traded their 1st in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, and now 2018, and traded 2016's 1st mid-way through his rookie year (Hield). And they wonder why they have a lot of expensive contracts handed out to fringe-starter/rotation types and are still lacking in depth.

I get the move by itself, but the last time they had a 1st round pick make it to his second year was Austin Rivers.  They also have no second round pick this year as they dumped it over the summer to get under the luxury tax.

I like this move for both sides. Mirotic gets a fresh start and he should do very will next to Davis, plus NO has a team option for next season. Bulls manage to get a 1st for a player they didn't want anymore and who no longer wanted to be there.

Yeah, they will never have any picks until they blow it up and trade AD. At least they are trying to maintain and stay in the playoff race.

Its probably for the best for the Pelicans.

The Pelicans probably asked for protections on the pick, and the Bulls walked away.

No, it's primarily because Mirotic has a 1+1 with a team option.  If the Bulls pick it up, or the Pels agree to as part of the trade, he has no say.  Otherwise, he can veto, which is apparently where he's at.  The Pels don't want to pick it up because that would make their cap/tax situation even worse for next year than it is now.

Is that the report? So basically, Mirotic had a NTC of sorts and said no?

That's what I got from reading Woj's tweets. He signed a 1+1 this year, which means if he is traded and the option not picked up, he enters free agency next year with no Bird rights.  I do think we might see him accept a trade to a team that might re-sign him, but since New Orleans will be over the tax if they keep both Mirotic and Boogie, it's most likely that they'd decline his option and let him walk.

Back when Mirotic signed the deal I criticized Chicago for not making it a non-guaranteed second year instead of a team option, which would have allowed them to trade him without his permission.  This is why.

So wait, Mirotic actually wants to play on a $12.5 option?!

@BillSimmons
--Asik has 3 years/$34 million left.
--Last June, the Bulls sold the rights to Jordan Bell for $3.5 million.
--8 months later, they'd be buying a mid-teens 1st round pick for $34 million.
--WHAT????????????????
