Wizards Admit Players-Only Meeting Was Likely UnproductiveThe Washington Wizards recently had a players-only meeting that several players finally spoke about publicly.

“We had our team meeting,” John Wall said Friday. “A couple guys took it the negative way and it hurt our team. Instead of taking it in a positive way like we did in the past and using it to build our team up, it kind of set us back a little bit.”

“It was tough. I try to keep all our stuff as personal as possible but I think in a way not everybody got a chance to speak whenever they wanted to,” Bradley Beal said. “They didn’t want to bring up an issue or something they had a problem with on the team. Regardless of what may be going on, as men we’ve got to be able to accept what the next man says, be respectful about it and move on from it. I think it was one of those situations where we didn’t necessarily get everything that we wanted to get accomplished.

“Honestly, it was probably — I won’t say pointless,” Beal continued, “but we didn’t accomplish what we needed to accomplish in that meeting.”

Jason Smith was less hopeful that the team issues had been solved with it becoming unproductive.

“Sometimes you need those moments to just get everything out in the air,” Smith said. “Just like any family. You got to let things out. You can’t hold it in and let things fester.” at times.

Scott Brooks said he never knew about the meeting.

Wall also suggested the Washington front office has work to do as well to help out the situation.

“Upstairs,” Wall said. “Front office got to figure it out.”

Honestly this is kind of surprising. That core has been together quite a long time, you would figure they would at least get along at a basic level from the amount of time together. What can they do to shake it up? Gortat expires next years so may they get something useful attaching a first round pick to him if they have one... Jordan could really help that team out a lot.

Jordan would be interesting, but the player that makes sense to trade is Otto Porter and he has a no trade clause for this season.  That said, if Porter agreed, I think something like Jordan and W. Johnson for Porter would make some sense for both teams.

There's no talk about who are the offended people.  With Beal and Wall bringing it up I would assume they are on the same page, myself.  Who knows.

Great for the Celtics come playoff time aside from Lebron the only individual players that I worry about in the east are Wall and Giannis. Let Wall's team fight while the Cs wait out Lebron leaving to go West.

I would love to see that trade. Would be curious how Porter looks in an offense less dominated by Wall and Beal.

Hasn't that team had issues every season for the last few years?

I don't think it is surprising. Just a continuation of the past. The front office has never dealt with the team's issues in the past so they just keep coming back up again. And again.

My guess at the problems:

(1) lack of ball movement = none of their big men can pass the ball well. Neither do their wings. So the ball ends up in Wall's hands a lot and Beal's some. The other guys do not feel as involved in things offensively as they want to be.

(2) Wall and Beal have had issues on and off throughout their stay in Washington. Guessing that Beal feels Wall hogs the ball too much. And that Wall feels Beal is too inconsistent effort wise. Although that one seems to have solved itself over the last two years. Beal far more aggressive on the offensive end than he used to be when he would often be "in and out" of games.

(3) Defensive effort = long been an issue for the team. Wall was one of the league's finest defensive PGs a few years ago. Now only mediocre. Ever since Nene's role in the team lessened, the team has struggled to maintain a defensive mindset. The team is filled with more average defenders than high level defenders. And with middling effort from it's two leaders (Wall, Beal), the rest of the team often follows their lead effort wise on D.

(4) Bench production = lack of it. The team is far too reliant on it's starters. I guess the starters question the bench's contributions and are unhappy at how much harder they are making the starter's lives.

(5) Haven't built the team around Wall's strengths. Wall is a premier drive and kick PG. Why were they so slow to put more 3 point shooting around him? To exploit his passing ability + to open lanes for his driving ability because he is a fantastic driver once he has space to attack. Instead it forced him into many more inefficient shots (which probably tick off his teammates). Even now with more 3 point shooting on the team, the Wizards are still in the bottom 3rd of the league in terms of 3 point attempts. The Wizards FO are wasting Wall's talents by not building a team around his specific talents. I for one would love to see Wall in a D'Antoni type offense.

(6) Their head coach is mediocre. His teams in OKC regularly underperformed. He failed to build a collective offensive system and instead relied on star-led iso play. His teams failed to maximize their defensive talent too. No surprise the same things are happening in WAS. Scott Brooks simply isn't a good coach.

Sign of a team that's not Mentally Tough.

They won't have Paul Pierce draining buzzer-beating threes to save their behinds THIS time...

When / If they meet us in the playoffs later this season they'll have:

An MVP-Candidate in Kyrie Irving with a BUTT-LOAD to prove...

Marcus Smart who will bring his A-Game and will be trying to cement his place in BOS for the next few years...

Jaylen Brown who will look to build on his season AND his playoff performance in spot minutes last season..

Jason Tatum who is NOT playing like a rookie..

AND - we COULD have Gordon Hayward back as well......

Let WAS implode. They lack Mental Toughness.

Living in DC, this isn't remotely surprising to me.  Wall is a talented player, but with an ego that is outsized for even his abilities.  He and Beal really couldn't get along for some time, because Beal had the same ego.  Then, last year, they somehow patched it up between the two of them, but what it's really become is two egos morphed into one.  It is impossible for them to let others onto the team into their orbit.  They don't like Porter at all, and so won't pass him the ball in the 4th quarter.  They both feel they should be All-Star starters, All-NBA, and I think Wall feels he should get MVP consideration.  So they play for stats, and convinced themselves that they were the true challengers to Cleveland last year -- in their collective mind (Wall and Beal, that is), I don't know if they even truly think they lost to the Celtics.

The Wizards are a talented team that can go on spurts, but sooner or later the Wall+Beal ego shows up, doesn't share the ball on the court, and divides the team off the court.  Meanwhile they've done a terrible job of managing their salary (over the tax this year, and will be for 2-3 more years, even after trading a 1st last year for salary mitigation).

In one sense, you don't want to face them in the playoffs because they're capable of going on a 5-10 game stretch of elite basketball.  On the other hand, when you beat them the finger-pointing starts really quickly.

They have had talent for a few years yet it is failed to mesh.  I don't know if its is the coach, but definitely this makes me think it is their personalities.

Shoulda tried swinging for the fences with a Boogie trade last year when he (apparently) could've been had for cheap. I mean, maybe that idiotic Kings owner just had Buddy Hield goggles, but still. Porter + picks + whatever would have been a decent package by comparison. I see no chance NOP entertains a Boogie trade before this year's deadline, even with a big contract due to Cousins. On the other hand, who knows what Boogie wants - maybe the plan is to see if WAS extends him a big offer next summer.

I say Boogie because he played with Wall in college and because the egos on that team would be so explosive they might need to move it outside D.C.
