it is a lot of money and they have no interest in stopping it.   I think all remittances should be taxed and use that money for border security.  Also, Pres. Trump, is not really beloved by Mexico and they might not work with them.
I'm quite curious now. Do conservatives really believe in letting you keep (more of) the money you earned, or does it not apply when you come from Mexico?

If they want to fund border security, they should tax everyone for it.. I don't think anything else is fair.

I agree. If immigrants are working legally, tax them at the same rates as everyone else. What they do with their money is their business. Sending it to Mexico is no less legit than taking a vacation, going to a casino, buying a bigger TV, etc.

Double taxation - taxing them on their earnings, and then taxing them gain when they send their post-tax dollars abroad - seems wrong.
And yet most Dems have no problem with double taxation if it comes in the form of inheritance tax.

I'd rather double tax money leaving the country than double tax money passed down to kin.

Well, you can guess my feelings on that tax, as well.

If Congress wanted to pass a tax of general effect on international money transfers of any nature, I doubt it would be the immigrants crying the most loudly.

Somebody in the chain of command should have shut this down before it got this far:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/news/morning-mix/wp/2018/01/22/ice-detains-a-polish-doctor-and-green-card-holder-who-has-lived-in-the-u-s-for-nearly-40-years/

Unless he lied on his green card renewal, there is no reason to waste resources on a case like this. ICE officers in Michigan have way too much time on their hands.

While ICE has largely deported people from "bleephole countries", they have been wasting their time with all sort of nonsense cases that appear to have no purpose other than indiscriminately inflicting undue suffering. Like this for example:

Yeah. At least here the detainees are in the country illegally. These should be “back of the line” cases, but I suppose there’s a justification for prosecuting eventually.

But deporting somebody with a valid green card who serves his community and pays taxes just due to a couple of misdemeanors from 25 years ago? That’s lunacy. I’d fire the prosecutor and the lead ICE agent on the spot.

It's a tangent but that's not double taxation, it's one tax of a transfer of money, just like we do for a vast array of other transactions.

It's double taxation and it's disgustingly wrong.

But yeah, I guess it's off topic, so I won't say anymore about it.

Just because you've been here for 20 years doesn't mean you can just apply for citizenship. Heck, you can be in the country legally for many years and still have no legal way for obtaining citizenship.

The issue some people come here and never try to join the system.  Do they benefit being outside it, that I cannot say.  But I have some information below that might indicate they do.

I think a lot of illegals are paid under the table.   Can you really that naive to think there are millions who are not.  Certainly not all are, but quite a few do not pay federal taxes

PolitiFact, a Pulitzer Prize-winning fact check organization, investigated Clinton’s claim and reported: “While there is no official figure, experts estimate that about half of all undocumented workers pay federal income taxes, if not more.”

Guess, what that is not double taxation because some of them are not paying taxes to begin with.

Agree, that is fair.  I also think those who have been  paying taxes should go ahead in line of those who don't.

I like roads, believe in the social safety net and have always believed in paying my share of my taxes.  But there is a shadow economy out there folks and industries like Construction make a killing paying these folks under the table.

So the people who send money abroad are all illegals? Well done on the assumptions there.

I never said that, grow up... When you are refuted you can't admit it and have to go into attack mode to satisfy your fragile ego.  I will thank you in advance for not putting my words in my mouth in the future.

An heir has never been taxed on the inheritance he receives.

You did mention that many illegals, many millions, pay taxes. Also, I am sure there are millions more of Mexican Americans and legal Mexican immigrants who pay taxes. For all these people it would be double taxation if they are taxed on money being sent to Mexico. And that goes for any other nationality that is here legally or not who send money out of country. Your proposal would penalize millions who pay their taxes because of the minority who are not in the country legally and don't pay taxes.

This simply isn’t true.

TomHeinsohn can correct me if I am wrong but I think what he is saying is that the heir him/herself is only being taxed once.

We’re all already double taxed. We get taxed on our earnings and our expenditures. If you’re a business owner, you’re taxed on your sales, your payroll, your earnings, and your expenditures.

This has little to do with the above conversation (have not acquainted myself with it), but I’ve always found the term “double taxed” an odd one.
