...a +15 on the floor, in a close game against the best team in the league, where many of our starters were in the negative.

For the season we are +5 on offense and +3 on defense with him on the floor.

And he both takes bad shots and misses nearly all of them.

Has there ever been another player who helped his team more while looking, at least casually,  like he was hurting them? It’s a serious question.

Smart technically scored -1 points due to the basket interference.

Was just going to start this thread. My title was going to say that Smart scored -1 points and was -1 for 7...and a plus 15.

Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

The bench was 2-19, but a combined +30 for the game.  I'm not sure how that's possible.

Smart is a mystery. Just about every time he takes a shot I squirm. His erratic drives make me cringe.

Yet deficits get smaller when he’s on the floor. Leads get larger. The kid just always happen to be on the floor when good things happen for the Celtics. No, maybe he doesn’t have the best individual stats. But he’s clearly impacting the team in a positive way.

It’s possible because Stevens was successful in pairing starters with the second unit, so as to cover their awful shooting up.

Separately, I’m not sure +/- for one game is necessarily indicative of a player “doing well.” It could simply indicate you were on the floor when one of your teammates, or a pair of your teammates, suddenly get very hot.

Smart didn’t have a good game. He did well on the defensive end on many occasions, but did not overall play a good game. That being said, he could be a psychological boost for other players.

When you watch the game, every loose ball, every forced turnover, every contested rebound, it seems like smart is either directly involved or in the vicinity. The Celtics are dragging teams down into the mud to fight for wins and Smart is the muddiest of them all. If this guy ever develops an average offensive game (obpm =0.0), or at least develops half the vision Rondo had, he's going to be a deadly NBA player. He's our best player on the defensive end and it's not even close.

I also posted his +/- for the year so far, for that exact reason.

But even so - tonight, when he was on the court we basically dominated the best team in the league. It is what it is. I don't know what "he didn't play a good game" means in that light.

I just meant he didn’t play well offensively. I agree with you that Smart is an enigma, who seems to be a  positive effect.

I have hope he’ll get better offensively with time.

Rondo was brilliant, but Marcus does have pretty good vision.

He needs to be able to hit catch and shoot open 3s. There is no way around it. Hes just got to learn to do that.

The good news is he is still only 23, I say he has 2-3 years to 'pull it together' on the offensive end before give up hope on his FG%. Given the fact that he was a project offensively coming in and that in most of his early years he played off ball to IT giving him less opportunities, I think he needs to learn on the court with SOME of these bad shots and find his game. Its Brads job to reign him in IMO, he is still developing.
