I'm all for keeping Smart after this season, but only for a modest price. When stuff like this comes out, I'm afraid of what his price tag might be this off-season.

Excellent article by Alex West and thanks for posting it here.

My hope is that both Danny AND Marcus' camp can come to some agreement on the contract stuff.    We NEED him here.

He impacts the game positively in so many ways.

If Smart gets 4/80M+ on the market, then he's gone, and frankly I wouldn't really lose sleep IF we lost him at that price.

Really hoping they can keep him though, at around 4/70M.

His shooting is poor enough if he doesn't turn it around something fierce its likely to depress his market value, especially as a RFA.

He might be back on the QO.

Eh I think he'll get an extension still, but hopefully the market does get lower so that we can keep him around 4 years, 60-70M.

The thing if, you can have a huge impact in every area of the game. But  if you cant put the ball in the basket you just aren't worth starter money. I went into the season thinking 50/4 for Smart, and that's still where I'm at. But I'm not super comfortable with that.

The way he's "shooting" this season, every arena should play this when he reports to the scorer's table  -

So there are no stats that show that he's good, but he is and here are some cherrypicked clips and dubious claims like Smart has been a major contributor to the Cs improved defensive rebounding that prove the author's premise. That POS analysis is, however, surpassed by the OP's linked tweet:

Quote
Marcus Smart was 1 of 8 tonight and the Celtics had a 110 offensive rating with him on the floor. And people will say this is about noise, but it’s happening EVERY game.

However, Smart has a 95 offensive rating per 100 possessions going into tonight's game:

I love Smart's intangibles and want to see Smart play at the level justifying a decent contract. He hasn't and I expect that if he doesn't find his shot in the remainder of his 4th season, someone will pay up for the possibility that he eventually will, but it won't be Danny.

I remember they use to get on Shaq about his free throws and he Would always fire back.. He has never lost a game because of his bad free throw shooting - He would always hit them when it mattered..  He was right..

Thinking of Smart.. We all know the games he has won due to hustle, steals, a timely rebound, A timely charge... But can anybody name a game that we lost Because Smart had a horrible shooting night.. I really cant.. (especially not this year and he has had some clunkers..)

Has he ever shot is into a loss (ala Joe Johnson / Josh Smith)

Heck most of our losses actually happen when he has had a decent to great shooting night..

I still think Andre Roberson is a helpful test case. He made the all defense second team last season, can't shoot, and signed a new contract with the Thunder for 3 years, $30 mil.

I think Smart is better than Roberson because he brings a level of playmaking and leadership that Roberson doesn't but what is that going to be worth on the open market? It would really shock me if any team offered Smart anywhere near $20 mil per year. I'm guessing the C's can bring him back for something like $12 a year.

And I really do hope they work it out and Smart sticks around for a long time.
