Yes temporarily.  Have to have 4 players each miss at least 3 consecutive games and get league approval.  When any of the four inactive players who have triggered the exception returns, the team has to release a player to get back down to 15.

It is desperation — because they have so many injured players, they were allowed to sign a 16th man.  They have to release Smith (who’s contract isn’t guaranteed) as soon as someone gets healthy.

They literally needed a body who wouldn’t demand a guaranteed contract, which is all Smith is.

Yep and if by some miracle he can actually play, they will have to release or trade a player under a guaranteed contract.

The Pelicans are a complete mess with so many unmovable long and big contracts.  Then those players are hurt compounding matters.
