The #Celtics have signed center Daniel Ochefu. The 6-11 center played in 19 games with the Wizards as a rookie last season.

Who?

Why won't anybody sign Jarnell Stokes?  Super productive at lower levels, looks good in Summer League, only 23 years old.

He seems like a stiff judging from his college stats. He did play for Villanova and won an NCAA Title. I guess that should count for something.

He makes sense as a 15th man. We need a 3rd string center, he was on a NBA roster last year. Long arms. They took a look at Thomas Robinson and did not sign him. Daniel seems to be of similar size. Need anyone who can block shots and rebound.

Thomas Robinson  Age 26.6
2012 NBA Draft Combine   6-8 3/4 w/ shoes  7-3 1/4 wingspan   8-10 standing reach

Daniel Ochefu  Age 23.8
2011 LeBron James Camp  6-10.5 w/shoes    7-3 wingspan

Yeah, I would think there'd be no shortage of productive traditional big men from the last several draft classes who are currently FA or in the G-League.  Not sure why they went with a guy who has very little track record of producing against NBA level players.  I assume they know something we don't.

10 minute pre-draft video 2016 - Didn't get drafted

Article about Wizard's Summer League...mention of Ochefu.
https://www.bulletsforever.com/2017/7/15/15971204/washington-wizards-summer-league-nba-2017-player-development

"Daniel Ochefu raised some eyebrows with his play too. He wasn’t as flashy or nearly as athletic as Mac but was able to muster 7.2 points and 6.4 rebounds in just 21.2 minutes of action per night......"

...."However, when he was matched up against the up-and-rising talent in Bam Adebayo of the Miami Heat, Ochefu turned in his worst game of the tournament while Adebayo put up a rock solid 16 point, 7 rebound performance."

My opinion: Rather decent passer...Brad will like that. Somewhat disruptive defender...deflecting passes and blocking shots. Seems decent offensively near the hoop.

Not super athletic... will be pushed around by stronger players. He'll have to work on his shooting, quickness and awareness on the court.

I like the signing....maybe he's just a G-League pickup for now?

"Ochefu wasn’t a major player for the Wizards and wasn’t set to be a fixture in the rotation, but he was a body they liked having around on the roster and a solid locker room presence."

I should add, I expect he might be released again so the Celtics can send him to Maine.  This would help him gain familiarity with the system, but he’d be free to sign with anyone who offered him an NBA deal.
