If Embiid meets the super max criteria over course of deal, he could earn as much as $178M.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
They are banking on Embiid being healthy, and if he is, he would have commanded the same amount of money regardless.

IDK if I'm wrong, but with this extension, at least they get an extra year of Embiid, right?

Not bad for having 31 NBA games under your belt.

Tough spot for Philly. Embiid has shown All-NBA, maybe even MVP potential, and someone would've paid him, but he's of course incredibly brittle and hasn't been able to stay on the court after 2 years of not being able to get on the court.

This contract could be the beginning of locking in a contending core, it could almost totally negate any positive traction "the process" has given their franchise and put them right back to square one in a few seasons. Or even worse, Embiid plays just enough to put them on the treadmill of mediocrity but never able to rise to a real threat. The odds of the latter two scenarios seem higher.

Great move by the Sixers. He is the basis of  their entire rebuild. They also have more insight into his health than anyone else. If they are investing in him long-term, it means they are confident he will be a franchise cornerstone for 10+ years.

Agents always leak the top level number without details.  I'd expect 20-30M is non-guaranteed incentive based.

There is no reason to wait out the season and see how it goes before giving him that deal. He's restricted after all. Man the amount of money given away for just a glimpse of talent in 4 years.

Shams now reporting only about half the $ is guaranteed, but the contract could also rise to $178 mill if the supermax conditions are met. Substantially less risk for Philly in that case.

  • A true Celtic plays with heart.
Marks posted up on ESPN insiders about a clause in a contract that they could implement, to protect themselves. Also says that the same clause can be applied or constructed similarily, in reference/regards to Jabari Parker's next contract extension.

Can anyone with NBA insider please post it?

Agreed.  Especially since that franchise isn't THAT far removed from the Andrew Bynum misadventure, which seems to me like a pretty similar case.
