Was watching a game recently in which the announcers pronounced Daniel Theis' last name to sound like "thice".

My pleasure.

I'm curious so see how he pronounces it. Based on the German language it could be pronounced as "zis', with the TH creating a Z sound.

/taɪ̯s/ is my best bet, and it is in moments like this I regret dropping German after a couple of years.

I'm p sure there is at least one German native speaker in the Forums though, I remember him commenting on Theis and the German national team a few days ago.

Wouldn't it be a little bit more like 'tize', since 's' is usually pronounced less softly, but rather hard (as in 'Musik', 'super', 'sondern' and so on)???  ;)

Now that i think about it that is better.... But trying to find the right article , the right casus and where to place the verb leaves me no time to pay attention to pronounciation :D

No, that only applies when the S is at the beginning of a word and followed by a vowel, or when it's between vowels. Theis is pronounced like "Tice". It begins just like "type" or "tight", and ends just like "ice" or "mice."

It's actually more like "dice". I'm not a native speaker, either, but I have a degree in German and had phonetics as part of my Middle High German class.

My stereotype of Germans is that they're inclined to split hairs - and maybe people who find their ways into Middle High German classes fit the stereotype as well...

Perhaps Daniel Theis will show an obsessive attention to detail, something that will serve him well in the NBA.
