Do the Cavs change their lineup by benching JR Smith, and having Kyrie Irving and Rose in the backcourt in their starting line up? If that's the case, then the Cavs have improved considerably, since the less Smith plays the better off they are.

Do people really not understand the defensive side of basketball? With a challenge from the Lakers, that would be the worst defensive backcourt in the league. Smith isn't a world beater on defense but he is significantly better than Rose and also 3-4 inches taller. So you have Rose guard Klay Thompson and Irving guard Curry?
Yeah I agree with clay on this one.  Rose should not start.  I disagee with clay though in that I like Rose as a back-up PG for the Cavs (as well as occasionally playing with Irving).  I think Rose is a pretty big upgrade on Deron Williams, Jose Calderon, and Kay Felder, the current/potential back-up PG's in Cleveland.

I don't disagree with you that he is probably better than those guys overall (which is pretty faint praise). What I think the bigger issue is that they have a finite amount of roster spaces and they do have some serious needs in bringing in a few defensive specialists. As we discussed bringing back Delly, or having been able to horn in on the Beverly trade or even bringing in old friend Tony Allen all would have filled a much bigger need than adding another offensive player. Between Love, Smith, Lebron, Irving plus the shooting of Korver the offense is completely covered. Heck even Jeff Green can score a little. However, who is going to put up defensive resistence against guards and wings?
Sure, but they can only sign players that want to go there for basically the minimum.  They can easily let players go if better ones come along.  A team shouldn't not upgrade a position though just because some future player that may not arrive would be a better fit.

They did add Osman who is most known as a defender and is a younger guy.  Green is also a decent enough defender (though is obviously older and not near the defender he once was).  They absolutely need a guard defender, but those guys just aren't available very often and are rarely available at the minimum.  The Cavs had no way to acquire Beverly as they have no assets and only 2 small non (or partially) guaranteed contracts.

There is very little the Cavs can do outside of trading Love to really get better.  Maybe the perfect storm arises and a team like Milwaukee wants to dump salary and they can somehow land a guy like Delly back in town, but the odds of something like that happening are very small.
