"Isaiah Thomas has seen the contracts passed out to free agents, and believes he is due a max contract when he hits free agency."

This reeks of some trouble down the road.

This reeks of some trouble down the road.

If he plays this year like he did last year, he's right!

What's the controversy? He will get max, and deserves it.

Why?  If he keeps playing like he did last year, he'll have earned it.  Pay him the max.

The only trouble would come with trying to lowball an elite player.

It's hard to argue that he's not worth at least Lowry / Holiday money.

I don't think Danny will give him the max.

Zach Lowe said that the Celtics strongly feel they don't have to MAX him out.

It's the elephant in the room. Not going to lie, a 5 year max is scary at his size. Would he take the same contract Lowry did? Probably not. There is going to be some push and pull.

Negotiation tactics. He'll get the max or very close to it.

He's going to get paid a ton of money. The full, 5/170+ MAX? Probably not, but he's going to be compensated quite fairly.
Isaiah, you were lightning in a bottle.

I'm hoping for 4 years, $120 million.  I'm fine with a 4 year max. That 5th year scares me a bit though, and would for just about anyone.

Paying max money to perennial All-Stars is just a normal part of the NBA.  Length of the deal is the only thing I could see becoming a minor issue.  There seems to be a notion that only the true top tier players deserve max money when in reality it makes no sense.  With 30 teams you are always going to see All-Star players getting maxed out.  I know there's a minority that wanted us to trade IT but we would never receive adequate compensation in a deal for him.

The hip injury is an obvious concern but he deserves a max deal if he continues to perform at an elite level.  Ownership might have luxury tax concerns but the Bradley trade should allow us to pay IT and Marcus.  At that point we can see how far the current group takes us while Jaylen and Tatum develop.  Also, if a major star like Anthony Davis becomes available we will have the assets and contracts to match up in a trade.

I have never been able to wrap my head around the worries that people have about paying IT.  It's very difficult to attain players like him AND make them happy at the same time.

How many years would he have to sign for to create a scenario like Haywards where he can opt out when he is eligible for the 10 year vet max?

Ideally that would be my preference.  Short term, big money, let him opt out when he is eligible for the next tier.  This would help us focus on the short term IT, Al, GH years while eventually transitioning to the 7/11, Draft pick era, while providing further financial incentive for IT who could get another big deal at his 10 year mark.

If we get to cute with our offer, we run the risk of him feeling insulted, and leaving.

Along with a big stink that hurts future free agency.

If his feelings get hurt let him leave. The team is bigger than 1 player. Smart or someone else would come running to help lead this team to championships.  I believe whoever plays best between IT and Smart will be the starter in 2018-2019.
