When a player tells you where he wants to play, alienating himself from the rest of the league, you had better listen, because he's very serious, (AND really dumb judging from a pure business standpoint.) He's telling you, I don't care about the money, I just want to go home. IMO That's a card a smart player holds tight to his hand.
Over paying for him and then having him run to LA would be embarrassing to the organization, and a waste of assets.
I want players who are thrilled to be playing for the Boston Celtics. Who want a ring, not a homecoming dance.
