@stevekylerNBA besides the rumors already out there (pursuing Hayward/Griffin, trading for PG13) is there any other Cs rumors you're hearing

Rudy Gay could be the third option for Boston if they miss on the major guys

If we miss out on Hayward, Griffin and George, I would rather the C's play the young wings Brown and Tatum on rookie contracts, than offer Gay a big deal.

Also would rather use that money to take on a legit PF/C in a trade.

Thoughts?

I get it but at some point some of these players have to realize they aren't max guys.

He "could be". I think chances are better that Danny brings Antoine Walker back, though.

Not worth it unless it's only one year guaranteed.

I'd prefer to just play the young wings also.

Positionally it makes a lot of sense.  And will he make even half of what Griffin/Hayward will get?

Seems like a good guy to start at PF, instead of KO for example (although I like KO's ability as backup center....we have Zizic and Thiess now so KO is not as needed size-wise.)

Adding Gay adds shooting and allows Tatum to come along at proper speed.

Yeah, right......

Ainge isn't signing an injured Rudy Gay.  He probably wouldn't sign a healthy Rudy Gay.  What a waste of money that would be.

A 31 year old coming off an Achilles tear doesn't seem like a good investment.

I've always wanted to watch a broke elephant jack up a three pointer and then dance. I'd consider paying more money to watch that

I think Rudy Gay is a back up plan but it's a lot further down the list than plan B.

Plans:
1. Sign Hayward
2. Sign Blake
3. Trade for George (renegotiate and extend)
4. Sign Millsap (3 years or less)
5. Sign Gallinari (3 years or less)
6. Sign Gay (3 years or less)

The benefit of the last two is their lower than max contracts would allow us to bring back Olynyk. I think Gay could end up being a good buy low. If Stevens can get Gay to play within the offense, defend and play the 4, I think he could be an asset that appreciates while in Boston and can be moved later for higher return.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Doesn't that depend on the price?

Depends on his recovery and the price.  He's not a guy with many NBA miles on his legs.

I can't imagine it will take a lot of money to sign him.  Seems like he'd take a discount (or have to take one depending on teams' view of his injury) to come to a near-contender with a hole in their lineup at his position.

Even if his game has dropped off (or if Tatum overtook him by the end of the year), he could still add something the Celtics need off the bench.

edit: I realize he is not an inspiring choice, but I feel like he could do good things on a team with structure under Brad Steven's direction.

Gay might be a reasonable dollar, fewer year deal. The mid level is $8-9, so maybe he is a bit north of that, basically splitting the max slot with Olynyk. I might do a 1+1, but would go for a
2+1. As mentioned, he would make us better. It's Rudy vs Amir for crying out loud. Also a good wing mentor, him having been The Man, allstar, etc. as a wing. And we have 2 hopefully future allstar wings.

Not really. Rudy Gay would be a bad fit in our system, and the history of old guys coming off Achilles injuries isn't great.

Gay opted out of a $14 million contract. He's not taking a short term deal at just north of the MLE.
