This surely would not be the end of the world. If the Celtics do not sign any FA's or make a significant trade, then that gives Brown and Tatum more minutes. It also gives the Celtics the ability to sign players to one and two year deals keeping cap flexibility. Maybe a little disappointing not to sign anyone, but at the same time the Celtics are in position to put together a championship roster. They should be in no rush to be in cap hell or trade assets unless it is for the real deal.

I guess the root of my question is:

If none of the guys I mentioned are coming, then who is the next target, and how long do the Celts need to wait to go after that target?

I don't think Danny is ever going to stop trying to make that one big move that'll vault the team to contention.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

While it would be a coup to grab 2 Max players this summer, I highly doubt it happens. The C's would have to just about empty the basket of assets to do it for a short window of opportunity...I don't think Danny wants to do that.

Adding 1 Max player, OTOH, is something I think Danny is going to work hard to bring off. Hayward is target A, George might be target B, Griffin *might* be target C, and I doubt anybody else out there is both available and worth a Max contract.

However, adding no Max players this summer is certainly not the end of the world! This team made the ECF, but unlike the 2002 C's team I think this one can still take a step or two forward. Brown, Tatum, high draft picks, and several young players still improving means it's still two or three years early to know whether it has maxed out and needs to be blown up.

Danny came in summer of 2002, decided that team had gone as far as it could. He began to unwind it churning and churning personnel trying to remake the team. He kept only the young Paul Pierce.

This time the C's might have the cashe of assets to carry them to the next level without having to break the team down.

My guess is we sign some value guys on 1 or 2 year deals to maintain cap flexibility or maybe use the extra space to extend Isaiah and/or Avery. Increasing their salary this year could allow us to offer them lower salaries on a per year basis going forward. Then we play out next year as likely favorites to face the Cavs in the ECF. We get minuets for our young guys and hope someone makes a leap giving us a clear young building block going forward. We hope that either or both of BRK and LAL are bad and give us 1 or 2 top five picks. We pray that NOP is awful, AD gets tired of losing and NOP decide to trade him to us for a poo-poo plater of picks. If that doesn't happen we make the picks and go forward developing a young team with 3-4 top five picks. In 4-5 years when GS passes it's prime we start ramping it up. Not a bad situation to be in.

It seems like after Griffin and Hayward, there are a lot of guys who I would not want to pay max money for but would still likely get it (or close to it, even with the cap lower than predicted) in this market. So there would be players like Millsap and Ibaka but I don't want to be the team that overpays for them.

Below them, there's not much that appeals to me, either in terms of talent of team need. If Gallinari could be signed for a reasonable amount, maybe he's the target once again.

Below him, we're looking at names like Mason Plumlee, Rudy Gay, Ersan Ilyasova, Taj Gibson, Nikola Mirotic, Nene, and JaMychal Green. Maybe take a flyer on Donatas Motiejunas? Or Thomas Robinson as a rebounding specialist?

There's not much of a middle class of free agency. Maybe the best option would be to look around for a PF upgrade in the trade market and use the cap space to take back money, which could grease the wheels for another team. I'm not sure who would be worth it, though. Lamarcus Aldridge, who might only be on his contract for another year? Derick Favors, if you think he can get healthy again? It's tough.

Perfect.  We want to be set up for 10 years, not 2.

Keep building through the draft like all the other elite teams...

We will be a better team than last year without making any moves at all.  We're not in a bad or desperate spot at all..

Either Porzingis or Davis at this time... Who knows when either could be available via trade

Danny is trying to build a "dual" team.   It benefits the young guys more than it does vets like IT4, Horford.

I'm actually not, I'm just worried about tying up roughly $60 million on him and Horford if we are forced to go small against Warriors/Cavs with Durant/LeBron at the 4. Seems like one of them would have to sit.

Since there aren't many centers with skill (at least on elite teams), I'd let Zizic battle the few that do.

bad idea

I know some don't like this idea...but I rather sign Dion Waiters to a 3 year 40 million dollar deal (if Celts can't sign Hayward or obtain PG13) to provide some additional firepower/scoring off the bench

Youre right, Porzingis is probably the next target if Hayward / George fall through.

When is Klay Thompson available?   GSW is going to have a hard time keeping all of that together (if they win 1 more chip I Can see Klay being ready to get from beneath the shadow ala Kobe and Shaq)
