NBA announces salary cap is $2m less than expected. Ainge pre-empts this announcement by trading #1 for #3 thus reducing commitments by $1.4m making it easier to make room for Gordon Hayward.

We may even see another trade down to alleviate even more salary without giving up other current roster players.

Consider Gordon Hayward a lock.

The more I think about it the more it is not a lock

May have a better chance to sign Griffin

Triboy, do expand...I see it as a given. The Celtics moves are so calculated it is as if they already know the plan and they just need to walk the path and position salary cap room to do what they want. Rarely does a team trade out of #1 at all nevermind as quickly as we did.

ainge made the trade to get a 2018 high pick, not because of salary cap considerations. That's a side benefit.

ETN, one could argue the side benefit in either manner. Maybe Ainge's first priority was salary cap room to ensure a max free agent and the side benefit was the pick. To so definitively state Ainge's objective seems to be conjecture.
