Seems like he's lukewarm on his star potential.

Tatum is a more skilled, 2 inches taller James Young

Only explosive in space...  At the nba level he may not be able to show his explosivness much at all

A lot of Melo and Pierce comparisons. But Pierce and Melo were superior athletes at 20 years old.

The aspect that restrains me from really dropping Tatum on my mock draft is his age. He just turned 19 in March. For a young freshman he's surprisingly comfortable on the court, which makes you wonder if the NCAA is just too easy competition for him and that he's got a lot more going for him than he was showing this year. But on the surface I just see a lesser Rudy Gay.

This is good stuff.  Thanks for the link.

A lot of this seems teachable to me.  It looks like he has two major flaws.

He's slow to make a decision when he gets the ball.  This allows the defense time to close out to jumpshots that they really shouldn't be able to bother, and it also allows them time to reset when he catches and holds before driving or passing.  This is a habit that the Celtics will need to break early, but I don't see any reason why they can't do it.

He's not explosive around the basket.  He looks fairly quick on the floor - not elite, but solid - but he really doesn't have much elevation in his game, either on his jumpshot or his finishing around the basket.  Improved footwork and lower body strength will do a lot for him I think, and his length will also help, but this is always going to be a weakness.

I truly believe your irrational confidence to player assessment accuracy ratio is the highest on this board.  Tatum is not like James Young in any way, shape or form.  What am I missing here?

Reminds me of Tobias Harris and Harrison Barnes.

His footwork is excellent! And he scores in multiple ways. Enjoy his rise!

After a freak start, the season ending injury- he never really got the opportunity to get his mojo back. Still Kobe swore by his ability to score.
