I don't feel like commenting on the presence of Hungary with this roster in the tournament.... Maybe they should expand the tournament so the Vatican can also participate!!!

Btw
I had no idea about this offer sheet system in Spain.....

Hungary's preliminary roster

http://www.fiba.com/eurobasket/2017/news/hungary-set-to-commence-build-up-to-eurobasket-campaign

Their captain, Adam Hanga, is prolly their most well known player. Drafted by the Spurs at #59 in 2011, he currently plays for Baskonia.

Excuse me, but are you telling me Rosco Allen is NOT the most well-known player?

To me, the most well-known is DeAndre Kane, who was a terrific player at Iowa State his senior season.

@saltlover

oh my, I lost far too many episodes in this year's summer league.

And I really have no clue about American college basketball  ;D

@ederson

I see your point, but this is how bball spreads in more countries tho. Think Germany 1993 and Greece 1987.

Giving the organization of the tournament to a country with little bball tradition + some help from the refs can work miracles.

Well tried formula indeed! Works often.
It didn't work as well in '94 at the football WC.

Power rankings by Amico Hoops

This author has 1. Spain 2. Greece 3. Serbia 4. Turkey 5. Croatia

And then Lithuania, France, and Italy in no particular order

FIBA's official site posted its own power rankings two weeks ago. IMO it's less good but has the advantage of having all the teams, and having a quick infobox on each of them.

It goes: 1. Spain 2. Serbia 3. Croatia 3. Greece 5. France 6. Italy 7. Lithuania 8. Italy

My own take is that Spain and Serbia have the best rosters because they combine talent wth experience. But both power rankings IMO underestimate Turkey. They will play all games at home.

Moreover, they have a good schedule. They are in the same group (D) with Serbia, which means if they finish first and Serbia second (or vice versa) they will not face each other until the finals. Finally, Spain being in group C could turn out well for Turkey's schedule in the knock-out round.

Bottom line is Turkey is guaranteed to get through its group, and assuming nothing goes awfully wrong at the quarterfinals, they will have to win one of two games at home to win a medal. I'm also pretty sure FIBA wouldn't mind Turkey doing well.

@ederson iirc you mentioned some power rankings earlier, would be great if you had a link to add to the above.

Thanks appreciated.

I was confused by the Aggravanises too. I haven´t followed the Greek league closely since the late 90s.

The older one is Dimitris, playing for Olympiacos, 23 yo iirc. The young one is Giannis Agravanis. An article I found from May 2017 says he is 18 yo and playing for Douka, a team in the Greek second division, A2. But I know very little about young Greek prospects.

PS To the point that only now did I realize we are the champions. 65-56 vs Israel. Thanks for mentioning the finals Ederson, I wouldn't have noticed it otherwise.

PPS doing my national duty and watching the vid uploaded by FIBA. A pretty atrocious first quarter so far.

Charalampo won MVP. I'm also told that the PG, Koniaris, who plays for PAOK Salonica was good. Israel's PG is Blatt's son btw and I'm reading now he had a good tournament.

It didn't get much better ..... During the whole tournament Greece had big blackouts during the games and couldn't hit a bucket. The quarterfinal against Lithouania was a great game though. But imho it was a fair won trophy.

Koniaris continued what has been a good season for him but Charalampopoulos is the leader of the team. I hope he gets more play time next year (90% he is heading to paok) and he ll improve. It will be such a waste of talent.

Now we wait for Giannis to perform some magic in September :D

In future, I'll be directing questions on A1 and A2 to Ederson. obv is more into it than I am. I hadn't even noticed Koniaris until I watched the game  ;D

You will be disappointed :D I don't watch that closely.

To be honest at the moment i watch more A2 than A1. The level there is very low to even discuss about it but you follow your team regardless relegations :(

For Greeks except for Greece666, what's your view on Papagiannis? Imo he can start for Greece and can really produce.

I ve watched him with the junior NTs and he has has nice soft hands and he can finish close to the rim. A bit slow imho.

Before the draft i wanted the Cs to get at the second round maybe end of the first. He was drafted too high. He is not a lottery pick and he won't fulfill the expectations.

I don't know if he ll start for the NT. Depends on where Giannis will play and if Koufos accepts the invitation. (i think the roster hasn't yet been completed). There is also Printezis at PF and Bourousis at C both had great seasons , not easy to be pushed to the bench .....

PS my 100% free-of-Celtics-bias opinion is that Zizic is better

Israel started training camp a week ago. Coach is Erez Edelstein. He has mostly worked in Israel, but was in 2006-8 assistant in Olympiacos.

Israel will be hosting group B (Ukraine, Lithuania, Georgia, Italy, Germany) in Tel Aviv.

My impression is they will be happy if they qualify to the knock out phase, but outside Halperin, Casspi and Pnini, I don't have the faintest about their players, anyone that could fill this up is welcome.
