Please indulge me as I believe I may have wasted a few hours on this. I took the player rankings from a Hoops Hype online article (http://hoopshype.com/2017/04/28/we-have-ranked-all-the-players-in-the-nba-this-season/) and used them to create team (squad) rankings. Simply I added up the rankings of each teams top 5 and top 10 players. So if a player ranked 15 I added 15 to that team's ranking up to the top 10 ranked players. So the lower the score the better. I used the rankings from the article if I agreed with them or not. I should also point out that better teams may have had up to 14 players ranked by the time I got to the worst teams tenth player. This blows out the scores of the worst teams but probably reflects the difference in talent. Make of it what you will.

can't see how boston is #3 for their top 5 but Cleveland is #9.  that alone gives me pause to accept the credibility of the ratings

Yeah, Lebron is better than our whole starting line-up. Without weighted rankings, it doesn't totally work; however, after you get past the superstars, it seems like a pretty interesting system.

One of my main aims was to see what the Celtics would have to do to get close to GSW. Top 5 wise you really are pushing it even if you pick up a player like Davis. I also thought it would be interesting to see how a team like Philly improves through mostly natural growth.

I'd suggest doing a top 3 also.  Not weighted rankings but it would help account for the impact of stars.

It's a good idea. I might not have the time for a little while but I will get to it.
