Last night the announcers talked about Grant Hill and his prime being cut short. A conversation started about who the starting 5 would be on an all-time lineup of similar career arcs (played well for at least a few seasons). I can't think of a quality 4.
1. Derrick Rose
2. Penny Hardaway
3. Grant Hill
4. ??
5. Bill Walton
Allston, MA --> Enfield Tennis Academy

3. Grant Hill / T - Mac
4. Amar'e / maybe Griffin(?)
5. Ralph Sampson / Bill Walton / Andrew Bynum

I hope Embiid never makes this list.

Someone at the center position that immediately pops in my head is Yao Ming. He had some incredible years before foot injuries ended his career prematurely.

How about Oden?

Sabonis also comes to mind but his injuries were before the NBA. His time in Europe though he was amazing.

These guys come to mind as well. Shaun Livingston, Brandon Roy, Brad Daugherty, Ralph Sampson, Jay Williams (accident), TMac, Danny Manning.

Bernard King needs to on the list somewhere.

Derek Smith was a heck of a player before he became hobbled by a knee injury.

I feel like Bogut could have had a much better career without so many injuries too.

I'm always fascinated by guys like Livingston who reinvent themselves after devastating injuries and go on to have long careers.

Yup

I guess not cause the OP asks for players who had ''played well for at least a few seasons''.

If that's the case, Oden doesn't count either.

I guess Reggie Lewis counts though.

He's called one of the worst #1 picks of all time, which IMO it very unfair. Unlike the proposed list and the criteria for it: must have a few seasons of great play and then injuries curved the production(or completely stopped the production).
This guy broke his R hand freshman year of college and was one and done. He got his team to the Final Four and into the Championship against a truly great UFL team w/ top picks including #9 Noah, #3 Al Horford, and#7 Corey Brewer. He out shadowed his teammate Mike Conley (#4 overall) for the entire season. He did all this with a cast on his broken R hand which made it extremely difficult to shoot or use his right hand for post moves like bab hooks and etc. He had to use his left hand for many shots including his FT and his percentage was still 63%.

GREG ODEN has endured enough humiliation for a guy that could actually play. He was no stiff before the injuries and the chances are that he would have had an incredibly bright future in POR alongside Brandon Roy and Lamarcus Alridge.

GREG ODEN will never make any of these lists bc of the timing of the injuries. We have to admit that there was a legitimate conversation between Durant or Oden for the #1 and you can bet that if Durant was taken #1 the Sonics would have taken Oden #2 w/o much thought.
