Here is the Celtics current cap situation for next year

       Player   2017-2018
    1   Bradley   $8,808,989
    2   Brown, Jaylen   $4,956,480
    3   Crowder, Jae   $6,796,117
    5   Horford, Al   $27,734,405
    6   Rozier, Terry   $1,988,520
    7   Smart, Marcus   $4,538,020
    8   Thomas, Isaiah   $6,261,395
    9   Yabusele, Guerschon   $2,247,480
    10   Žižić, Ante   $1,645,200
    11   Fultz   $7,026,240
    12   2017 Pick #37   $815,615
    13   2017 Pick #53   $815,615
    14   2017 Pick #56   $815,615
       Projected Salary-   $74,449,691
       Projected Cap   101,000,000
       Celtics Cap Space   $26,550,309

By July we will need to free up the requisite cap space to free up $3.5 million in order to give Hayward a contract starting at $30,000,000 the easiest way to do this will be to trade one of our players to a team under the cap that can absorb the salary. Trying to match salaries won't work in this case.

Bearing this in mind, here is a trade that could work for us, in the long and short term.

Avery Bradley for Holmes and Covington. Bradley's salary for next year is $8,808,989 with Holmes and Covington on team options of just over $1,000,000

This is how the trade affects the cap

       Player   2017-2018
    1   Holmes   $1,025,834
    2   Covington   $1,015,696
    3   Brown, Jaylen   $4,956,480
    4   Crowder, Jae   $6,796,117
    5   Horford, Al   $27,734,405
    6   Rozier, Terry   $1,988,520
    7   Smart, Marcus   $4,538,020
    8   Thomas, Isaiah   $6,261,395
    9   Yabusele, Guerschon   $2,247,480
    10   Hayward   $30,000,000
    11   Žižić, Ante   $1,645,200
    12   Fultz   $7,026,240
    13   2017 Pick #37   $815,615
    14   2017 Pick #53   $815,615
    15   2017 Pick #56   $815,615
       Projected Salary-   $97,682,232
       Projected Cap   101,000,000
       Celtics Cap Space   $3,317,768

Why for Boston
  • Need to free up cap space for Hayward
  • Holmes is a great rotation big man that can play both PF/C and is a low end rim protector and rebound
    • Covington is the ultimate 3 and D guy and can play both the 3 and 4 spots and has defensive versatility like Crowder
    • We need cheap contracts to fill out the roster, those positions also need to be productive because if we renounce Olynk, Jerebko, Zeller we have no big man depth.
    • Need to lose a guard to free up minutes for Fultz

    • Have to pay Bradley a salary over 20 million per year as a FA next summer

    Why for Philadelphia

    • Philly needs shooters around Simmons and Avery fits the bill
    • With Simmons and Embiid healthy and their number 3 pick coming in, there is likely no room for Covington and Holmes
    • Philly is currently under the salary floor and needs to add salary.

What are your thoughts? Bearing in mind the case laid out above

Avery Bradley is probably my favorite current Celtics player, I love what he brings to the table. That being said I would do this deal. I would probably actually be wiling to do it straight up for Holmes. That may not be fair value talent wise but he has two years left on his contract at super cheap money and would be an upgrade over every big on the roster except Horford.

That being said I wouldn't rule out Smart being the one who gets dealt. His contract is just big enough that dealing him for future picks opens up the space. And he's also the least talented of the Crowder/Bradley/Smart trio and from everything we've heard the front office loves Bradley.

Holmes and Covington are RFA in 2018 (next year). We actually picked Mickey a few spots before Holmes was selected in that draft. Then DA cut our 28th pick in the 1st, RJ Hunter.

Ideally we should not have to worry because we drafted a PF 16th last year and he spent an entire season in Europe.

If we traded AB and/or Smart and etc.  to Philly I could see (and would want) Ainge also bringing back Jahlil Okafor.

Also Philly has the Kings 2019 1st unprotected.

We need to consolidate roster spot, not expand them. We would have to send another player to them to balance the roster. But Bradley alone is an overpay for both of them.

Covington makes $1m?? Talk about a bargain. He strikes me as one of those glue guy role players. In a better situation, I think he can bring what Crowder does. Now, before everybody hates on me, think about if Crowder played in Philly and was one of their main guys. Philly is like our team except without Isaiah, Horford and Bradley.

Very well thought out option.  I wouldn't do it without assurances from Hayward, but if you know you're getting Hayward you do this in a heartbeat.

Holmes has a 1.6 million team option for 18-19, so he has two years of team control remaining.

It is a pretty good trade IMO but why would Philly want to do this?

They wouldn't except maybe if they can't workout an extension with Covington this offseason.  Covington has become a key player for them with his excellent perimeter defense.  Holmes is their cheap development backup behind Embiid.  They want to trade Okafor.  So if they trade Holmes too, they'd have to pay a lot more for a backup center.

TP to Rida for reprinting the salary situation play-by-player.

If cutting $3.5 million in salary is the goal, I see many other ways to do that other than trading Bradley. How about trading away some of those 2nd rounders and other/or small salaries? Or, like LilRip says, you might as well trade Crowder (instead of Bradley) if you are signing Hayward, especially if Covington is coming back.

I might be in the minority here but trading Bradley to sign Gordon Hayward does not make this team that much better.  Might not even be an upgrade.
