What extension is he eligible for?

Makes sense to keep fanbase happy, then be rewarded with the 5 year max

He could get 5 years, $146 million this summer.
Could you break down the structure of that for me?

TP in advance to the resident cap guru

Salaries of:
25.25 million
27.27 million
29.29 million
31.31 million
33.33 million

Assuming a $101 million cap this year.  It's kind of pretty, numerically.

All he said was that he's willing to wait for free agency to get his money.  I'd be surprised if there is serious talk of giving him an extension.

I think the likelihood of serious talk depends on the likelihood of acquiring a game-changing free agent or player via trade.  An extension this year saves them money in the future, making it easier to keep other players, or even be able to afford better free agents through the MLE.  If they are unable to add a significant player, I will be surprised if he isn't extended.

He's saying the right things. What else could he say?  When he talked about the Brinks truck he was healthy playing at an all star level and we were only dreaming of the #1 pick.   Heck, at that time there was more talk about trading for Cousins or someone else to help IT, then there was about drafting Fultz.  Now he's he injured, and could possibly be out till December.  We're sitting on the #1 pick and looking at drafting a guy at his position with the potential to be some type of Irving-Wall-Westbrook hybrid.  And worst of all, IT has shown in three consecutive years that his defensive limitation are more significant in the playoffs than in the regular season.  This is not the time to ask for a raise, and in order to get a 5 year super max he needs to wait till 2018 FA anyway.

For me, he said many of the things I wanted to hear.

IT has just floated around the league without really finding a true home for years. The Kings had no idea what they're doing, and the Suns didn't give him a chance, and didn't really want him.

The Celtics organization has blown life into his career, they gave him a real chance. I wanted to know he understood that. I wanted to know if he was a true Celtic in the tradition, or a hired gun looking for commercial success.

For the right contract, under the right circumstances I'd love for this kid to be a Celtic for years to come.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
We need to pay Isaiah, just for this alone.

What a great thing to do for the team. He's willing to be under a lot of financial uncertainty if it means having the team improve. Team first.

I love what you're doing, IT. Thank you.

What team could remotely possibly have all of these things?
1.  30 million in open cap space after the 2018 season.
2.  A desperate need for a starting point guard.
3.  A willingness to blow it all on 5'9, 30+ year old PG.

Offering I.T. an extension for anything above half that is pointless for the C's to do.  They will very likely be bidding against themselves for his services following the 2018 season and get him for far far less.

Serious respect to the little guy. A lot of players would ask for the max in his place.

He's a blessing to this organization.

Here's a question:

Let's say the Celtics strike out in free agency, would it be possible for Ainge to tear up the final year of his contract, and give IT something like $80 million for 2018, 2019, 2020? This would align IT to expire will Al Horford.

Reminds me a bit of the David Ortiz situation with the Red Sox years ago.  He came to the team on a great contract (given what he was about to produce in Boston) and they upped him once he showed the production.

I hope Isaiah is willing to take a 3 year max deal as opposed to a 5 next offseason. He seems like a reasonable dude, so I think he'd understand signing a guy who is 5'8 that relies on speed, that takes a pounding every night, that is now worried about a serious injury that could deteriorate his career quickly into his 30s is a real risk.

injury has me concerned also now.  Him as a sixth man....wow...we would be deadly. with our past luck or lack thereof in free agency maybe we need to hold him as a hedge just in case until our young studs we draft develop.
