So let me say this. Its not about the money with IT. Say 30 million a year for three years after his contracts ends next year would be fine by me. Its the year 4 and 5 he would command on a max deal. In year 5 at 33-34 years old he would be making 40 million. That is crazy.

Exactly right on year 4 and 5. TP for you.  I agree I would do the deal for 3 years, my guess is someone else will offer him 4.

Here is a question

Will IT4 sulk/maybe even demand a trade.... If the Celts draft Fultz and offer max to Hayward (offer accepted or not)...yet IT4 does not hear a whisper about his extension

I'd like to hope not, but my inner pessimist wouldn't be surprised. It doesn't seem in line with his character though.

Given some of the stuff he's said, I'd say it is in line with his character.

Remember when Rondo said he believed he was a max guy?  Ainge smiled, and before too long he was out the door.

IT has to decide where he fits best. I hope CBS shows him film to see he gives up as much as he gets. Not a winning formula. 6th man, period. Ask Ginobli how that works out. Not okay?  Best of luck in your future endeavors.

In all honesty, I hope he does! :) :)

Nope. We have Fultz now, so that shouldn't even be an option. He has significant holes in his game that do not warrant him as a $30M per year player, and his game will not age well at all. And once he loses a step he'll probably be a borderline NBA player due to his size deficiencies.

Honestly, if Fultz looks ready for starter's minutes after his rookie year, I'm fine with letting IT walk and committing to AB, especially if we signed someone like Hayward or Griffin this summer.

People forget that IT was in an absolutely maximal environment to max out his game this year. If we add another scorer this year in addition to Fultz, then IT's scoring becomes that much less needed, especially with development from Jaylen, too.

In a vacuum those 3 taking up 90% of your cap space is really bad, but luckily we won't be making this decision in a vacuum

The main problem I see with not extending IT (or trading him for picks), is that this team would not continue to win in the short term without him - don't let the 2 halfs against Cleveland fool you.  And, without the winning culture, perhaps Jaylen and Fultz don't develop the way they need to.  They somehow need to continue to win, while letting Jaylen and Fultz develop and earn their way into the lineup, so they can then take over and dominate in 2-3 years.

That's sub-max. Of course you sign him.

Individual: All-NBA Second Team. 28.9 ppg (3rd). .625 eFG% (9th). 10.9 Offensive Win Shares (2nd)

Team: #1 seed in the Conference. 7th best offense. 2nd in assists per possession.

Intangibles: Played after losing his sister, after getting teeth knocked out, after tearing his labrum. Elite 4th quarter scorer. Leader.

Also, the way these players look at it, they think that if they have been underpaid for the past few years (like IT) that the new contract also is a makeup deal, making them whole for all the lost dollars from their cheaper deal.

Correct. Easy decision. Absolutely you sign him at this number.

Six players in NBA history have scored more than 28 ppg with a TS% over .620.

Three are in the HOF. Two others have won MVPs (Curry, Durant). Then there's IT.

Nate "Tiny " Archibald   28.2 ppg with 9.2 assists in 71-72 and then a whopping 34 ppg with 11.4 assists!!!!!  But he never won a title until he met Bird.

It's really about team balance. Bird had plenty of help. IT doesn't have nearly enough help up front.

The Celtics are a flawed team right now. Heavy in guards (heavier with Fultz), and light up front. It's remarkable they've done so well with what they have up front. But they hit a wall against the elite teams because the likes of AJ, KO, Zeller, Jerebko aren't of championship caliber. They are basically 11,12,13,14 players--not 6,7,8,9 players.

Horford needs better bigs around him. Plus they need another big scorer.

How many rings did Archibald or Paul win?

I think Ainge will keep the team together through next season and add Fultz and Hayward.
