I don't get picky when it comes to end of bench guys making the vet minimum. Whoever will sign that has a pulse.
I'll admit it, as a basketball coach, I have a tendency to isolate on what players do defensively
and on the sidelines. By all accounts, Gerald was a terrific teammate-rejoiced in other players success, and had positive body language on and off the floor. I don't think he ever firmly established a role, but clearly he had a positive effect in a number of games. Rondo going down and Gerald Green heating up, helped the Celtics get out of the first round.
That being said, dollar for dollar, he had more value than some of the players on this team. I mean he was on vet minimum and averaged 5.6 pts on 11 minutes per game.
He could help a number of teams and should have more playing time-LA Clippers, NO, Chicago, GS would be possibilities.
He's defense-while improved since his last stint in Boston, remains an issue. It makes it hard to play him with a pg who also struggles defensively, especially when there is no interior defense on this team.
Boston needs shooting. Where are you going to find a terrific athlete who can play defense and shoot the ball? Usually that guy is a starter. Green checks off two of those boxes.
I would imagine, that before Boston even considers replacing Green's limited role, they will have to:
*clear up the glut of guards
* find a player who can rebound/and block shots
*upgrade the SF position
This will be a delicious off season. If Boston signs Hayward, drafts Fultz, I expect Danny to try to find a player who can bring some toughness. For the lauded Boston defense, the Celtics seemed soft against Cleveland.
