I feel dumber for having read that.

Who is the All-Star we're trading IT for?

Why would Hayward come here after we traded our best player?

Why would Fultz "struggle to find minutes" if he's a lock to be a "fantastic NBA player in short order"?

Remember that time when Kevin McHale's growth was stunted by Cedric Maxwell?

John Havlicek's by Sam Jones, et al.?

James Worthy's by Jamal Wilkes?

Also dumber for having read that.

So what do we expect to get in return for IT?  Horford?  AB?

If we're trading IT, we're a lottery team.  Full on blow-up sounds great.

Which one of those guys was a tiny point guard about to get $30 million a year?

Fultz will be better than IT.
Fultz can defend.

The nonsense about trading IT is that we have to take ~6M back in salary.  What the heck are we going to get that is any good for that?

He may very well be in 3-4 years.  Horford will be about cooked, and there'd be no point in resigning AB -- he'd just get in the way of the tank.

On the other hand, we could remain competitive in the East for a few more years while the youth develop, and I'd be willing to bet IT would have a great influence on Fultz's development.

Yeah but, he's short.

But the article makes it sound so easy! Just trade IT for Paul George or Jimmy Butler, because neither the Pacers nor the Bulls would possibly be rebuilding if they traded their star players.

You do not have to take back any salary if the team you are trading him to has cap space.  There will be tons of teams that have that much open cap this summer.  Same goes for the C's they would be able to trade him to another team and take back a lot more salary into their open cap space if they wanted this summer.

Not a very well thought out article. Who is trading for an injured 5'9" point guard? IT has the most value to the Celtics right now. It would be easier to trade IT after he comes back from injury and plays for a year and then signs a new contract not before that happens.

Did playing behind somebody else stunt the growth of those future HOFers or not?

Yep, that's pretty much what I'd like us to do as well. Fultz in, IT out.

The thing is, if we trade IT what can we get for him?

edit

Just read the article. No way we can trade Thomas for George/Butler, imo.
Quote
(...) the Celtics could likely exchange Thomas for an All-Star level player (...) The best option is to try and swap Thomas for fellow pending-free agent Paul George or someone like Jimmy Butler (...)

That's a pipe dream.
