I saw this in the Metro online:

Don’t expect Isaiah Thomas’ injured right hip to halt him from his goal of becoming one of the NBA’s top players year-in and year-out. Thomas is meeting with specialists this week and could potentially go under the knife. That should not be cause for alarm in Boston, however, according to Orthopedic Hip Surgeon and Sports Medicine expert Dr. Derek Ochiai.

“I don’t think I’d call it career-threatening by any means,” Ochiai told Metro on Monday. “It’s a very common injury. It’s not that unusual. There are several professional athletes from a lot of different sports who have had this type of condition. Nowadays it can absolutely be treated.”

According to Ochiai, Thomas has FAI (femoroacetabular impingement) in the hip.

“It’s a condition where the hip – it’s supposed to be a round on round joint, like round ball, round socket,” Ochiai said. “But people with FAI, their hip is ‘out of round.’ It’s not a round on round joint in certain positions of motion. That can cause increased pressure on the labrum and the cartilage around the outside of the hip joint. And over time that can cause a labral tear, or tearing of the cartilage away from the bone.”

Thomas may have to get hip arthroscopy, according to Ochiai, where they reshape the bone. But Ochiai believes Thomas should be back before the start of the 2017-18 NBA season.

“Usually a professional baseball player would come back in about 10 weeks,” Ochiai said. “For a basketball player, they’re going to be cutting more and there’s more change of direction. It would probably be about four and a half months.”

Much quicker recovery than I originally thought.

Yeah, somebody here yesterday predicted he would be out until the 2018 ASG, very relieved that's not the case.

How did the injury occur?  I am just assuming it was one of those drives to the basket where he hit the deck.  However, maybe the medical docs here can comment on why the joint is not "round-on-round".  Hopefully not a chronic condition and only due to injury?

Still, I'd be surprised if it didn't take him awhile to regain confidence in the hip and regain full form. It's certainly a point of uncertainty we don't need, going into a very complicated offseason roster-wise.

Bad timing for the max contract.

I hope he bounces back well.

As far as I know, FAI is something that you just grow up with. He's had it for his entire playing career, but it's not the kind of thing that gets noticed until it causes a related injury (like a torn labrum).  Hitting the deck so many times (combined with the wear caused by the FAI) may have brought about the labrum tear, but it didn't cause his FAI (which is just due to malformation of either the ball or socket)

Hopefully surgery to help aleviate the FAI (basically taking the not-round portion of his hip joint and shaving it down so that it is round) is all he needs, but if he needs surgery to fix the labrum tear, too, I'll be very worried about how the rest of his career looks. The FAI isn't enough to make me panic, but the labrum tear is definitely making me nervous (cartilage injuries are no joke)
I'm bitter.

so 16 weeks then.

I had the same surgery. The sutures will have to be done very well so they do NOT bother him when he comes back. All the cutting and explosiveness will really be making that hip want to swell up....

yesterday afternoon, I was stuck in traffic for a long time and ended up listening to  some Felger and Maz basketball talk.

After a few of their usual stupid takes, they actual stumbled over something that I felt was pretty interesting.

Did the Celtics need to rule Isaiah out for the year? He had obviously played through this injury to some extent for the past month, specifically after reinjuring it in game 6 against Washington.

Now if Boston can pull game 5 out of their asses, which is not outside the realm of possibility as we have still yet to have a real hot shooting performance from Bradley, Crowder and Horford, we will head into game 6 down 3-2 with a chance to win a game and send it back to Boston for game 7.

Game 6 would be 8 days after game 2, meaning Isaiah would have had 8 days of rest. The Cavs would be hearing all the "3-1 lead" stuff and Boston would be playing with house money, and getting Isaiah back would just be a further boost. Would 8 days of rest still left Isaiah to injured to play??? or did the Celtics jump the gun in ruling the little guy out for the year?

I think IT pushed it as far as the doctors were comfortable. Playing with a severe injury seems a bit fool-hardy.

No & no.

By the sounds of his injury, its going to take months to properly recover.  Celtics are also thinking about way more than the remainder of the '16-'17 season.   Why risk it?  Especially if he's playing at only 60%?

This is good news, I read somewhere that he was supposed to be out 6 months, I'm glad that was wrong.

I am happy for the timeline...but I wonder how he will be when he comes back.

Johnny Flynn and Martell Webster fell prey to it and were never the same.
LaMarcus Aldridge and Wilson Chandler had those injuries and came back.
(per Bill Simmons podcast 5.22.17)

I am pulling for him.

All depend on the doctor
under proper nutrition and treatment the cartilage will heal by itself
He can be as good as ever or he could be doomed rest of his career

Still really worried he won't be the same. He put a lot of torque and abuse on his body with quick cuts.

Starting to think AB makes more sense long term, though he has had some injury concerns too....

I think the same. IT will have to take a less than Max to stay a celtic IMO. Bradley is on the rise and he works hard on his game.
