  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Ainge implying IT was more hurt in Washington series than he was letting on.

"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

"So, supposedly when we went back on the court on Friday night, he was all over the doctors with eight minutes left in the third in a 40-point game to come back out. But the bottom line was he didn't have his burst. He doesn't have his bounce off of it. He doesn't have his push off it. He's going to see some specialists over the next few days starting [Monday] and determine the next course of action."

We're losing by 40 points, IT is clearly limited by a serious injury, and he's pressuring the doctors to clear him so he can compete alongside his teammates.

I want to build around this guy.

Bradley said as much after game 7, and IT confirmed that he has been injured and receiving treatment. It went pretty much unnoticed at the time, but he has been playing hurt. I wouldn't be surprised if the hip was aggravated by some of the cheap shots by the Wiz.

He's a warrior, it was an electric season, god bless Isaiah, it was a privilege to watch him, etc.

But...

If we continue to build around him given this hip injury, his age, his contract situation, his size and the subsequent limitations on defense and, in the playoffs, when his slim margin of error vanishes, on offense...we're fools.

I hope it's not that severe... Have seen a few posts from people who've torn labrums. I tore mine and had the surgery. In my case, I'd also damaged the top of the femur and socket. Both had to be shaved. As noted before, and from what I've learned, the likelihood of re-tearing is very high. I required micofracture surgery to help create cushion via scar tissue. Microfracture added 5 months to my recovery timeline. I was told never to play hockey again and to preserve my hip, that hip replacement within 5 years is likely. The message was that if I don't play it safe, there's little chance I'll be able to have a catch with my son. It's been 2.5 years and I still perform rehab exercise to avoid physical limitations and pain.

It is what it is.

He's our guy.  You can't be picky when it comes to superstars.  When you find a guy, you gotta do the best you can with that guy.  It's just too hard to secure a bona fide top option, franchise leader, every-night-producer superstar.

Instead of talking about trade options and whether we should give him the money he's earned, we should be talking about the best way to build a team around him to maximize our results during his prime and compensate for his inevitable decline.

It's too hard when you don't have access to the top of the lottery. But we'll have three straight top 3 picks to get that superstar. So, for us, it should be relatively easy. Committing to Isaiah now will only get in the way of their progress, especially Fultz's. He won't even be ready from this injury until next winter, and he may not ever be the same. It's time for us to start letting go.

I hope and pray that this isn't a McHale situation, where playing through this injury cuts  IT's career 4-5 years short. He started looking noticeably slower and less explosive towards the end of the Wizards series, and if he's been playing through this for 2 months, Lord knows how much damage he could have already done. The Celtics are a world-class organization, but I absolutely do not have any faith in their medical staff.

McHale was the best two way player in basketball before that injury. He could guard anyone and was unstoppable on the offensive end. He was still an excellent player after playing on the broken foot but he was never the best two way player in the game again...

My wife is a workers' comp attorney.  With this specific injury, she would be surprised if Isiah is ready to play again before Christmas.  He is looking at 5 to 6 months of re-hab.  If that isn't bad enough, the chance of him tearing it again is extremely high.  Not sure if a "max" pay day is coming his way now.  No doctor with guarantee he won't tear it again and again.  Ouch!!

This is horrid news for Isaiah (what a month for him) and bad news in the short-term for the C's.  Realistically, this would seem to make the Max-contract for Isaiah decision a little easier.

Didn't have time to read the whole thread, so apologies if already discussed, but if the recovery time is actually 6 months and if he is indeed at risk for re-injury, then does it make sense for Danny to offer a 1 or 2 year extension (10-15 M)?  IT gets some guaranteed $$ and a chance to prove himself beyond 2017-18, and the C's preserve cap room while continuing to assess IT's long-term value.

You can't really compare recovery times for people getting treatment through workers' comp to a professional athlete getting treatment through an NBA franchise.

An injury that an NBA player might come back from after a month or two could have a normal forty-something person getting treatment through a stingy WC carrier out of work for a year or more.
